I knew there wasn't a chance for Matthews, although I think he may have actually been the DROTY (in terms of actual play, not stats). Jarius Byrd and Brian Cushing had such mind boggling stats (for good reason too I assume) that it made me doubt it.

I didn't even know who Cushing was till his name was announced that he won ROY award. Clay was a total beast this year, then again he played on a better team than texans so he did not stand out as much as Cushing I suppose. Cushing is probably their best defensive player now or something.

Cushing did have a great year, though its tuff to compare the two. I wouldnt trade Cushing for CM3 though. CM3 will be a stud long past cushing's last snap.

really? i drafted cushing in my mock draft  for the packers last year. i had darelle revis 2 years before, unfortunately i hit only the jackpot on one player each year, the rest is (mostly) crap

clay was outstanding, too, of course. i love that Ted Thompson drafted him instead of cushing (at least after the season, at draft day i was pissed 😃 ).

At least we know he was the best defensive rookie in the NFC then.

per PFT

Brian Cushing does, with 39 1st place votes. Jarius Byrd get 6 1st place votes. Clay came in third with three 1st place votes. Oh well, he's a stud.

OK, no biggie. Why? Because had it been another year, Matthews would have won it. Cushing had a freak year for a rookie. Props to Cushing.

Props to Matthews as well. Great draft pick and I'm glad we got rid of some excess draft picks to trade up for him. :thumbright:

I am not going to take anything away from Cushing because he sure did have a great rookie season. I was kind of blown away by the lopsided amount of votes received though.

As Z2C stated, Cushing-16 games...CM3- 13 games. This helps.

Also to contribute, Matthews DOES play on a better stacked defensive team and he is one of the shining stars of the defense. Cushing plays on a team with maybe 2 big names on defense (Mario Williams and Demeco Ryans).

Congrats to Cushing. Packers fans and the NFC North know what Clay is capable of doing. Both players will be beastly for years to come.
