The entire problem is assholes in the left lane, and people deciding to take 3 minutes to pass someone. If you don't have a reason to be in the left lane, be in the right lane. Very simple rule, makes everyone's life easier. It irritates me to no end when you have 4 lanes going in each direction, and the two right lanes are virtually empty, with the two left lanes crammed.

Drives me nuts. They go the same speed in both lanes.

Actually it's forbidden to use the left lane when the right one is free, but some people don't care about it. Neither the drivers, nor the police. Damn.

For those who care about the dangerousness of driving fast:
USA (with speed limit): 12,25 traffic deaths per 100,000 population
Germany (without speed limit): 4,8 traffic deaths per 100,000 population

"GermanGilbert" wrote:

That's because Americans can't drive. I love this country as much as anyone, but 2 things that drive me nuts are our backwards attitudes towards sex and lack of driving ability.

As for Dutch motor homes, waiting to see Rockmolder's reply....
It's probably also because they can't drive with those wooden shoes.

It's even worse in snow. Changing lanes to pass is a bitch. It's all about me. Why should I have to deviate MY path if I'm going slower than the right lane and there's cars piling up behind me? They can all change lanes in the snow. Me memememememe

the biggest danger on the roads are people who are going 55 in a 65 AND the other ones going 85 in a 65. both types are as dangerous as the other. when truckers go that fast, it is EXTREMELY dangerous! what the vast majority of car drivers don't understand is that they cannot stop on a dime nor can they slow down quickly. they've got major tonnage moving!!

"zombieslayer" wrote:

I got a buddy who's a trucker and he'd probably give you a +1 for that statement.

He HATES car drivers. They're idiots. He wishes people would simply give him space. Yes, trucks cannot stop on a dime nor can they maneuver like cars can. Yet some car drivers think they can cut them off. When a car gets killed by a trucker, I'd put my odds 10 to 1 that it was the car driver's fault.

Car drivers also don't realize just how big blind spots are for trucks. He told me when passing a truck, pass the truck. Don't stay on its side. Also, give them plenty of space before and after passing. Don't tailgate. And whatever you do, don't cut them off or go back in their lane then slow down.

As a son of a trucker, I know all the unwritten rules and truckers' pet peeves.

You are totally right, Zombie. Never hang around the the sides of a trucker. Never. If you must get in front of him, make sure there are at least 2 car lengths in between you and the driver and have your blinker on PRIOR to moving in front of him! Once you do get in front.. DO NOT TOUCH YOUR BRAKE.

A pet peeve of mine is the anti-jake braking laws. Seriously?! You'd rather smell the burning brakes and cause more stress and accidents than having to hear the engine brakes go off? Ass-backwards.

But, having the speed limit the same for truckers is a good thing, despite some people's beliefs. It will first off allow truckers to get to their destinations faster (obviously.. but you don't understand the stress most of those drivers have to get to a particular place at a certain time.. Any little bit helps.. Which is why alot of guys keep a piss jar/bottle in their trucks), and secondly, it will allow traffic to move more smoothly.

I thought it was state regulated to have governors on company trucks at a certain speed limit? Maybe not, though.. It's been a LOOOONG time since my dad was a company driver.
