National Football Post; Sunday rewind article by Matt Bowen

...and other commentary.

...More and more 2-Man coverage

We have to understand that this is a so-called copycat league in the sense that tapes of each and every one of these games gets passed around to all 32 teams and everyone is looking for that scheme, coverage or play thats working on Sundays.

This year from a defensive perspective its 2-Man coverage (2 deep with 5 underneath playing trail man). I saw it from the Ravens, Saints, Broncos, Packers, etc.

The idea is simple as it takes away any inside breaking routes by the underneath defenders playing with inside man leverage and trailing the receiver knowing that he has two deep safeties playing over the top of the defense.

Yes, it can be beaten down the middle of the field between the safeties, but a perfect example was Jarrett Bush of the Packers, who undercut a 15-yard dig route by Seahawks WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh playing the technique so fundamentally sound that it looked like he was running the route. Sit hard inside and jump underneath the break.

It will be interesting to see if teams trust 2-Man enough to use it as a lead call especially on third downs in the playoffs.

Defending the West Coast

One reason youll see a team like Green Bay have so much success as a defense against a West Coast team like Seattle is because it can play man coverage against an offense that lives off inside breaking routes.

What I mean by that is that West Coast offenses throw the ball to a spot usually between the numbers and the hash marks. And they rarely run routes that break toward the sidelines (besides the option route).

The Packers, as a man team, can then jump routes and play to the scheme from their film study. Seattle QB Matt Hasselbeck didnt stand a chance against that defense.

I don't think it was here on PackersHome, but somewhere it was mentioned that Bush was informed by a local reporter that he "is the least popular player" on the Packers, as voted by the fans or some-such.

I have said a lot of not especially nice things about his play, and just wanted to take this opportunity to give him props--well deserved props--

Way to go Jarrett!

Two weeks in a row with an INT for Bush. Too bad last week's got called back due to Chillar's penalty.

His pick this week was an absolute thing of beauty.. couldn't have been played any better.

I don't know if that is sarcasm or not, if not it is statements like this that now just make me laugh.

Jarret Bush is never going to be an Al Harris or even a Tramon Williams, but maybe I am wrong, just take a look at his play the last 3 weeks(since he was thrust into the nickel back), he has gotten better every week.

With experience comes knowledge, Jarret Bush is showing every one of his ctritics that with playing time he can be a solid "cog" in the machine called The Packer Defense.

The coaches said a month ago that Jarret Bush was on the team because of his ST's play, he was never meant to be a nickel back, he was there in case of an emergency.

Well guess what, that emergency happened and IMHO Jarret Bush is proving the coaches and the Fans who have been on him since day one that they are wrong.

Congrats Jarret, hope you continue to improve!!!!

Lets not get carried away. This reminds me of when Shaq would have a game where he would make 90 percent of his free throws, and then would say after the game that he proved everyone wrong. No Shaq, your career ft percentage is 52%. You didn't prove anyone wrong.

Bush is still getting burned game after game. He was burned a few times in this game as well. His interception was awesome, yes. But he didn't prove anyone wrong yesterday. His "critics" have criticized him for playing poorly, which he has. So they were not wrong.

I am not getting carried away, I never said he wasn't getting burned at times, every player gets burned, my point is since he has been playing the nickel every game, knowing what his responsibilities are, he is getting better with each game.

Bush, A. J. Hawk, Ryan Grant all fall into the same category, there are posters on this forum who will never give them any credit, this is what I can't understand, some here just have to have their "whooping boys", this team is 6-1 the last 7 games, you would think by the posts in the gametime chat, and then post game that The Packers were 4-11, not 10-5.

IDK maybe I just look at things differently than some, this team is going to be real scary going into the play-offs, the defense is playing well, the running game really looke good yesterday(3 headed monster has come to Green Bay), and the passing game is what it is, dangerous in too many ways for a team to gameplan.

I guess I have rambled on enough, hell cut Bush, cut Grant, and trade Hawk, let's see how well The Pack does without them.

I agree with what buckeye is saying. I don't even see WHY people dislike A.J. Hawk. He is probably our most consistent linebacker that we have. He's durable and he's a damn good linebacker.

If it weren't for him, I seriously doubt we'd have the number 2 ranked defense.

I give credit where it is due. There were a lot of fans at Lambeau(including myself) that were high fiving each other in the stands when Jarrett made the interception. My ONLY point is he did not prove his critics wrong. He has earned his criticism.
