What effect is that?

By the way, have you noticed we not only joined the same day, we have the same number of applause points?

That's pretty funny.

But I was talking about a social isolation. Maybe 7th and 8th grade kids are somewhat young, but can you even get along without a phone these days, when you go to high school?

Just because "everyone" else is doing it doesn't mean it's vital for social interaction. If you're concerned about your kids not getting the full social experience so much, get a limited texting plan and make them pay the added costs if they go over the plan's limit. What I don't like is people texting more than they talk... Not healthy. Nothing replaces face to face communication.

Ironic that you post that on a place where you do not talk to people on the phone with, and probably will never met these people

Actually, I talk on the phone with a number of people from this site, and while I appreciate the irony of my posting what I did on this site, I add in my defense that I'm at home right now. I'm not hanging around this site when I'm out and about.

And +1 to Porforis. I couldn't agree more, though I'd amend your proposal to have the child pay for every text, with the texting option being stripped the first month he or she didn't pay on time.

I think texting can be useful if monitored..

For one my son who is disabled can't pick up the phone to his ear good enough to talk...So when I wish to "converse" with him I can..

Here at work I cant always answer the phone to talk to family, but I can text very easy..

At a store or a ball game, can't get reception that can able talking, but it will text fine..

I also have m y issues with it...My wife gets the brunt of it..She will text her kids to figure out "plans" and might take 15 minutes of texting back and forth to get it nailed down..My beef is that a phone call could handle it in 2 minutes

So while I think texting is fine, it can be annoying and stupid at the same time..

I don't think kids are sitting in a quiet playground next to each other texting.

You'd only text during class when you're not allowed to talk, or if the person you're texting is in another class, or if you're trying to find someone, or a whole heap of reasons which may not be related to normal conversation.

I don't buy it that texting is somehow wrong and that face to face communication is somehow some great social norm. Maybe I don't WANT to have others judge my body language, nuances in speech and more importantly, take some precious time out of my day to actually go see someone.

But most importantly, I find texting is supremely useful because the recipient might be busy and I don't want to disturb them, or a reply is not urgently required. Or, important information that must be documented (e.g. addresses or meetings).

Sexting is actually not really texting but sending MMS pictures. MMS can be optioned out of many different plans. I doubt kids are sending ASCII drawings of themselves.

Don't you have pre-paid over there?

If your kids have to life on nothing more than their allowance money, they'll spent it carefully.

I know no one who only talks on his mobile phone. If anything, it makes for easier hook ups and maintaining of relationships. Just like that scary regular phone did quite some years ago.

My little sister, for instance, texts an awfull lot, yet, she's one of the most social people I know. She goes out. She has (too) many friends.

I just think that this whole 'phones kill real life interactions' thing is too much of a doomsday scenario.

Texting sorry or breaking up that way is just a bad way to do it. You can't blame mobile phones for that. Blame the person.

Lydia's 13, she's had a phone for about a year and a half, maybe two years. Data, off, Texting, off and I control who she calls and who she can accept calls from. I was against her having a phone from the start, still am, but her mother is paying for it and says it's "safer" for her to have the phone. I said fine, I'm controlling the content then.

Periodically I take her phone and go through it, checking pictures she's taken and question her about them.

I'd prefer her not have one until she's 16, but restricting what access she has with it and the use of it is the best I can do.

So do I. I text myself all the time. It's especially useful when a single item of information needs to be stated or a quick question needs to be asked. I object to its use in lieu of meaningful conversations, as I see it being used by young people all the time. If the interaction stretches more than a couple of texts, I typically hit the green button to initiate a call.

For one my son who is disabled can't pick up the phone to his ear good enough to talk...So when I wish to "converse" with him I can..

I'm a little confused. What is the nature of his disability? He can't raise the phone to his ear but he has the manual dexterity to text? Or is this a one-way conversation?

This is one of the most valuable uses for texting -- communication during peak periods or areas of low bandwidth. If more people had texted instead of calling on 9/11, say, more messages would have gotten through.

Texting wasn't as available in 2001 as it is now. I do agree with your point though. I just don't know how many people can text while a plane crashed into their building or one near it.

lol, Zero2Cool, I wasn't talking about the people on the planes. I was talking about people trying to contact relatives or report missing loved ones. I was in La Crosse that day, and my phone was virtually unusable for almost 24 hours, because even here the circuits were jammed. The only way I had of contacting anyone that day was texting.

Emergency response services have starting asking people to refrain from calls during crisis periods and to resort to texting. That IS something I wholeheartedly approve of.
