Police Investigate "Sexting" at Fort Worth Middle School

Several students at Hillwood Middle School in North Fort Worth are being investigated for possession of child pornography, Fort Worth police said. The students are suspected of sending naked pictures by text message, which is also known as sexting, to classmates at the school. "It was a bunch of kids sending dirty pictures back and forth to each other", said a student. The student and others said the pictures started popping up on cell phones about a week ago.

Hillwood, which is part of the Keller Independent School District, has approximately 1,219 students in 7th and 8th grade. Students at Hillwood said as many as one hundred of their classmates received the pictures. "I find it very inappropriate," said Melanie Goodsell, a student at the school.

Her mother, Darlene Goodsell, agreed.

"It's wrong, and everybody at the school should know it's wrong and they should be punished for it," Goodsell said. Keller ISD released a statement Friday morning saying:

"Keller ISD is working with the Fort Worth police department in the ongoing investigation. As always, we will protect the identity and privacy of our students and refrain from providing any further details in this police matter."

Welcome to your brave new world, ladies and gentlemen, where middle schoolers can be charged with child pornography violations and have their lives fucked over for sending each other dirty pictures. I hope you like it.

Middle schoolers shouldn't be toting around cell phones to begin with, but to be charged with a sexual offense for the digital equivalent of playing doctor is ridiculous. This train is headed for a very dangerous cliff. We need to turn it around. And fast.

Some of this must fall on the parents.

I also generally don't like letting people off the hook under grounds of immaturity. Being on a register for having child pornography is way too strong a sentence. But they should be punished one way or another.

Spank 'em all soundly, send them to bed, and confiscate their phones, which they never should have had in the first place. Anything more serious than this is paranoia at best, vindictive at worst.

nothing wrong with them having phones, just disable their internet and data plan..So all they can do is place a phone call with it and text...But I monitor their usage and making sure no texts are being done during school hours

Thats what the wife and I do...

I have no intention of giving my kids cell phones, but obviously I respect parental choice in this matter. I would disable texting on the phones, though; I don't think it's healthy. Just another way for people to avoid real communication with each other these days (notice no one ever says "sorry" face-to-face or even by phone anymore -- it's always by text?). If it's important enough to say, it's important enough to make the investment into a telephone call or better yet, a live conversation.

It's weird. I was always an early adopter; it used to drive my parents nuts. But lately I've become a technology rebel. I guess I'm tired of being lonely surrounded by a cyberuniverse of social isolation.

And you're not afraid that it'll have the exact opposite effect?

What effect is that?

By the way, have you noticed we not only joined the same day, we have the same number of applause points?

That's pretty funny.

But I was talking about a social isolation. Maybe 7th and 8th grade kids are somewhat young, but can you even get along without a phone these days, when you go to high school?

Ironic that you post that on a place where you do not talk to people on the phone with, and probably will never met these people
