The announcers pointed out that the Packers frequently practice what they call their "four-minute drill." I really hope three consecutive runs isn't what constitutes the "four-minute drill." Maybe if we had a dominant run game. Maybe. But we have the best third-down quarterback in the league.

And I agree, wpr, I knew from the beginning of that drive it would be three consecutive runs. I think most of us did. It baffles me. If those of us who are just watching the game can figure it out, I have to think opposing defensive coordinators making millions of dollars a year can figure it out -- and the statistics bear out the fact that they do.

I don't know what McCarthy is afraid of. Is he afraid of unnecessarily injuring a player on a big play? Is he afraid of looking stupid when a daring play blows up in his face? Or is he just hellbent on turning this team into a defense-oriented team with a run-first offense despite all evidence to the contrary?

If there were three or four minutes left in the game, I would've hated it. But with the opportunity to bleed the clock almost down to the two-minute mark, against an offense that was not having success gaining yardage in big chunks, it was a reasonable decision.

If not a screen then a pass to a wideout for a few yards would have been fine. Even if they didn't get the 1st because of a great open field tackle would not have been any worse. It would have still ran the clock down to 2:07.

I agree that the called runs weren't ridiculous. My objection isn't to calling runs. My objection is to calling three consecutive runs deep in our own territory, since he does it all the time.

What bothers me most about this team is that it seems to be content with scoring just enough to win games. More often than not, that will be fine when beating up on cupcakes (though it sure wasn't fine against Tampa Bay), but sooner or later the Packers are going to come up against a team that won't start off slow or slack off in the second half, a team that will come out gunning and won't stop shooting until all four quarters are expired. A team like the Colts, for example. When that happens, the Packers' plodding ways won't be good enough, and I'm not convinced that the Packers will be able to shift gears quickly enough to compensate.

I don't believe that a win is a win is a win. I believe a bad win can be a harbinger of disappointments to come.

I don't know how alarming it really is.

We scored 125 points or 36% of our points in the 2nd quarter and average nearly 16 points in the first half and 33% of our points come in the 4th quarter.

What does this tell you? I know what it tells me.

What we are doing in the first half, for the most part works, which means the defense has to make adjustments. I say this because if the offense is working why would McCarthy CHANGE anything?

So the defensive schemes change and it takes McCarthy a few drives to see what it is they are doing and HE changes, thus, an increase in 4th quarter scoring.

I also noticed in games where we did not get going in the first half the 3rd quarter numbers were better so when it was McCarthy that needed to adjust he did some things that worked, i.e., the 17 we put up against the vikes in the 3rd after scoring 3 in the first half.

Of course there's those hellbent to portray McCarthy like some slug that comes out in the 3rd quarter with a little barley on his breath like he doesn't know what he's doing.

At halftime, in anticipation of the other guy switching things up, make a few adjustments yourself. If they don't work, you can always go back to what worked in the 1st half.
To get almost no points in the 3rd Q is just wrong. Very wrong.

The 1st and 3rd quarters are typically the lower scoring quarters for most teams. They are running their script plays. There are a lot of drives that start in the 1st/3rd and roll over to the following quarter which pads the 2nd/4th Q stats. There is more of sense of urgency at the end of the 2nd and 4th.
But with all that said, they should still have a min of 15-20% of their points in the 3rd. Not 10%

Last year when this happened, it was because someone was sending our playbook around the league every week.
