On the bright side, Ryan Grant notched an impressive game yesterday. That brings me hope and peace for the stretch run.

I'm not one of those rabid fans who feels they're entitled to a blowout victory every time. I don't even mind if the Packers are defeated by a superior team, as long as they play a solid game. What bothers me is close games or losses caused by the team's own mistakes. It also seems like this team, or at least this coach, often seems to lack the aggressive instinct to firmly put away inferior teams; they dally and toy around with teams they should defeat convincingly. Of course there will be many close games; perhaps even mostly close games. But it should be because teams are close or superior to ours in skill, not because our team is bumbling around making the same foolish mistakes week after week.

Last night's game in San Francisco was a perfect example of what often happens when a good team plays a division rival on the road. Although the division rival was the lesser team, they played harder and won the game. It's further proof that the Packers' win over the Bears on Sunday was not to be taken for granted.

I didn't like the lull in the middle, but the Packers dominated early and they dominated late against a team that was going all-out to salvage some respectability. The Packers punched, then absorbed a counterpunch, and then punched right back. It was a huge win, virtually assuring them a playoff spot. Winning ugly is what an NFL team needs to do. If you want style points, just wait a few months. The Olympics are right around the corner.

I can accept both of these posts all though I would feel just a twinge better if half of Grant's yards didn't come on one single play.
He had 137 total. 62 on the first play. That means for the remainder of the game he had 75 yards on 19 carries for a 3.95 avg. It was adequate.

Normally the Bears have a pretty stout defense. This year they are 24th giving up 4.4 yards per carry. I know this is being picky. Just saying it would have been nice to see Grant's numbers a little higher for the remainder of the game.

You know how mediocre a back that'd make Adrian Peterson? Lol.

That said, I get what you mean. He's one of those guys who's dependant on pounding the rock, breaking off a big run very seldomly. I still think that you have to give him some props for this game, though. Like Billick said, he kept his pads low and just kept on trucking. Often, there wasn't a whole lot to work with, but he just kept his legs going, picking up another 2 yards in the process.

He's no elite back, but he's no slouch, either.

Right. This is more of an indictment on the OL than on Grant.
Heading towards the playoofs it would be nice to run the ball with more consistency.

You just contradicted yourself with these two consecutive sentences. Sentence one = McCarthy is too predicatable.
Sentense two = McCarthy is trying to trick the defense.

You can't have it both ways.

"Nonstopdrivel" wrote:

Sure you can. We've discussed this at length in other threads and in the chat room. McCarthy's attempts at trickery have become predictable. It's as though he thinks if he does the same unusual play calls enough times in a row, he'll catch opposing defenses off guard. It hasn't happened yet, though.

"get_louder_at_lambeau" wrote:

So you think he's predictable in trying to be tricky I guess? Look at what you are complaining about a couple sentences later in this post, though-

I knew from the beginning of that drive it would be three consecutive runs. I think most of us did.

Is three running plays in a row with the lead in the 4th quarter, and trying to run out the clock anything other than simple, sound conservative-minded football? How is that "the same unusual playcalls"?

I have a feeling (if I'm wrong, let me know) that you criticize McCarthy's playcalling pretty consistently. Meanwhile, the Packers have had a top 10 offense every year since he got here, with two different QBs. He's doing something right, no?
