I feel like every game we hit a lull where the offense fails to do anything or turns the ball over on freak plays, and the defense all of sudden loses their shutout and starts giving up multiple scores. I don't know if it's necessarily always in the 3rd quarter, but it stresses me out. It probably hasn't happened as many times as it seems to me, but we seem in control of so many of these games early, and then we let a team back in, and then we have to step it up a bit to win.

I still put it on our offensive line.

OK, sacks are down, and the running stats just shot up. Good.

I don't know if this statistic exists...or ever did...but I know it when I see it.

I'll call it the- "OK, we are going to run the ball now, you know it, we know it, hell, everybody knows it, but there isn't a damn thing you can do about it"
statistic.

We don't have that, and I THINK our Mike McCarthy knows that, (I think he SHOULD know that, at least) ----he just thinks we WILL, NEXT play, or NEXT series, or NEXT game...all evidence to the contrary.

It is a leading cause of alcoholic beverage consumption in the Packer nation, imo

I did not realize it was this bad.
There is no excuse for playing so poorly in the 3rd Q of every single game.

I too get frustrated with Mikey's lack of desire to "get 6" and his predictability of trying to run late in the game. Yesterday I didn't have to wait until 3rd down and "inverted wishbone" to know it was going to be 3 runs and a punt.

What I can't figure out is if WE know how can he be so obtuse? And if Mikey can't figure it out what doesn't Uncle Ted drop by and say, "Ya know Mikey, those conservative plays you are calling late in the game are useless"?

Who's "Mikey" and what makes you think he/she does not want to score six points? Surely, not because the team isn't executing the plays, right?

Sure he wants the TD. Everyone always wants their team to get a TD. But how do they go about it?

I am implying the he gets extremely conservative and predictable in his play calling at times and seemingly would rather settle for a FG attempt than to open up the offense a little more and get the TD.

If the players don't execute, one of two things most likely has happened (for the most part). The offense did not do a good job with the play (if that is the case perhaps that play should be in the game day play book that week.)
Or the defense did an outstanding job at shutting the play down. Which could be because the defense is better or they know what the play most likely is going to be which implies Mike's conservative play calling nature.

There's been quite a few times where he went deep or for the jugular and it just failed. I suppose its convenient to forget about those times in your attempt to be condescending to him though.

Holy crap, you made me damn near defend the fool! Why you go and do that? Now I feel dirty.

The thing I don't like about the play calling is the slow developing running plays. You know, the ones where it feels like you could hop of your chair, run into the stadium and still make the tackle for a loss? Those plays.

All this talk about tempo, tempo, tempo, well show some urgency coming out of the half! Short quick throws, slam it up the middle, hit'em hard, don't let them change personnel, cut their damn throat open!

You just contradicted yourself with these two consecutive sentences. Sentence one = McCarthy is too predicatable.
Sentense two = McCarthy is trying to trick the defense.

You can't have it both ways.

"get_louder_at_lambeau" wrote:

Sure you can. We've discussed this at length in other threads and in the chat room. McCarthy's attempts at trickery have become predictable. It's as though he thinks if he does the same unusual play calls enough times in a row, he'll catch opposing defenses off guard. It hasn't happened yet, though.

We don't have that, and I THINK our Mike McCarthy knows that, (I think he SHOULD know that, at least) ----he just thinks we WILL, NEXT play, or NEXT series, or NEXT game...all evidence to the contrary.

You just said it better than I could have.

And I agree, wpr, I knew from the beginning of that drive it would be three consecutive runs. I think most of us did. It baffles me. If those of us who are just watching the game can figure it out, I have to think opposing defensive coordinators making millions of dollars a year can figure it out -- and the statistics bear out the fact that they do.

I don't know what McCarthy is afraid of. Is he afraid of unnecessarily injuring a player on a big play? Is he afraid of looking stupid when a daring play blows up in his face? Or is he just hellbent on turning this team into a defense-oriented team with a run-first offense despite all evidence to the contrary?

We can't seem to get the one first down we really need. Nothing gets to me more than giving the opposing team one more shot with 2 minutes left because we can't get one first down.

McCarthy thought the easiest way to make it a two-score game was with a field goal. Maybe he's thinking teams are expecting Rodgers to throw on 3rd since they've been as close to automatic on 3rd as you can get.

Although I would've liked to have seen a pass somewhere in that last possession, McCarthy did exactly what most other NFL coaches do time after time in that same situation. By handing off on all three plays, he was willing to accept the reduced chance of getting a first down so that he could run more time off the clock.

If there were three or four minutes left in the game, I would've hated it. But with the opportunity to bleed the clock almost down to the two-minute mark, against an offense that was not having success gaining yardage in big chunks, it was a reasonable decision.

Yes he has gone away from "Mike script" from time to time and it does pay off. (Or were they Aaron Rodgers audibles?) I don't know. Probably a bit of both.
