Adam Schefter Twitter:

With his contract set to expire after this season, LB Brandon Chillar signed a four-year, $21 million contract extension with Packers.

Interesting to see this is the first signing, however not surprising. I think they will wait to the last possible moment to resign guys like Collins who have less than 6 years exp. I just hope it doesnt blow up in their faces.

Anyway, good signing!

I didn't see Chillar as being a priority.
I think Collins play should have put him ahead of Chillar, especially considering his dissatisfaction during the preseason. This could affect team chemistry.
Bad timing IMHO.

Fair market value for someone who plays a decent amount in Nickel.

At least it shows the players that the Packers are willing to spend some of the cap room they've got.

Collins is going to wait for his money. Next in line is Pickett - I'd say a four year deal for Big Greasy is more important considering Collins is going to be a restricted free agent.

That's a lot of money. Supposedly he'll earn 9.5 mil between now and the end of 2010.

Shouldn't be too bad of a cap hit, because his signing/roster/whatever they decided upon bonus will have to be pro-rated for the life of the contract due to this deal being done subsequent to the 10th week of the season. This signing should actually be encouraging to other player's agents, because right now with all the financial uncertainties, extensions are pretty scarce in the NFL. It's all speculation regarding that contract at this point, but it sure isn't going to chew up all of that 15 mil in cap room. My WAG is <6mil of that 15 mil 2009 cap, but again, difficult to discern based only on 4 yr 21 mil, 7 mil guarantee and 9.5 mil through 2010. (Many variables, they could "jam" salary vs. signing bonus into this yr. to get around that pro-rata thing on signing bonuses, if they did, could bump that cap hit all the way to 10 or so)

Only important if we are planning on doing a couple more of these deals yet this year, and am only bringing it up to let everyone know (imo) that more deals still appear highly do-able from both a cap standpoint and from a "Apparently Ted is willing to do them/chew up that 15mil" standpoint.

Sounds like too much money for a backup, but it may not be, as we don't yet know the details. I heard that $7 million is guaranteed. I like Chillar a lot in this defense, so I'm glad we'll have him back next year.

Backup? He's now a starter. Didn't you hear that we changed from the 3-4 to the Psycho formation. 😛
