When I told the trooper I hadn't realized I was speeding, I was actually being honest, but he wasn't impressed. A friend of my wife's had lent us his Mitsubishi GT3000 (a hot sports car) to go pick up our car, which was in the shop. He had warned us that the accelerator pedal was sticky and that he was going to get it repaired in a couple of days. It was true, too. In order to get past 35 mph, you had to literally floor the pedal. Also, if you've ever driven a GT3000, you'll know that the engine is whisper quiet, and I was used to driving a Honda Accord that the previous owner had souped up with an exhaust head to make it extra noisy. I was used to hearing my engine roar if I was going over 70. So it truly didn't occur to me until I saw the lights in my rearview mirror that I was driving excessively fast.
