And a 129 yard game last week.

Seifert has this to say in his weekly Stock Watch...

Rising: Ryan Grant

His second 100-yard game of the season couldnt have come at a better time for the Packers, who needed to protect their injury-plagued defense as Sundays game against San Francisco progressed. His 129 yards helped the Packers maintain possession for a whopping 41:39 of the game, including the final 5:50. I think Grant would be a better back if he were complemented by a speedy backup, which would help make his own shifty pace more definable. But Grants style -- five yards here, six yards there, the occasional 21-yard run -- does lend itself to grinding out the clock in November/December games.

I agree with him. It would be nice if Grant had a quicker back who could consistently back him up (Jackson?) but it doesn't seem like this is a real possibility right now given the reality of our O-line. Grant may be running into the backs of his blockers, but I think he has the power to make yards out of those collapsing gaps.

It was nice to see Grant have a good game against a 49ers defensive front that isn't a joke. It is also interesting to note that in the last three games grant has averaged 101 yards and roughly 4.9 yards per carry. Compare this to the three weeks previous to these when Grant averaged 89 yards and roughly 4.1 yards per carry. We need Grant to get better every week as we head into December, and it seems as though he is having better games as the season wears on.

For all of the criticism leveled toward Grant, he is having a nice little season at 829 yards rushing and 148 receiving through 11 games. Would we all like to see him gain 7 yards every time he touched the ball? Yeah we would. But we'd also need to see a better O-Line. I'm not even going to touch the issue of the ZBS.

You know the nickname for a running game in the power scheme is "3 yards and a cloud of dust". The ZBS has its issues, but so does any scheme.

I agree with you MassPackersFan. I do think the ZBS requires very specific personnel and a coach to has a very good understanding of it though, while the power scheme is a little more straight forward for everyone involved. I'm not completely against the ZBS however.

Look, there I went touching the ZBS when I said I wouldn't.

I care less what system you employ, even our half baked scheme that is somewhere between man and zone.. it all comes down to basic fundamentals of the lineman and execution.

I will say that the majority of our issues up front reside in fundamentals first, unit communication and then maybe overall scheme whether it be run or pass... this is why I am on the Campen must go cart.. when you have had the same core group for 3 years and see little progress in the fundamentals and communication.. it lies upon the coaching staff more so than the players.

Hell I was on the questioning Campen's effectiveness in the later parts of 07... he can't get this line to consistently perform.. and at points execute in a pathetic nature.

Grant isn't a superstar back.. he is a serviceable back that is pretty dependable with the ball in hand.. he isn't elusive or nifty in the open field. He is what he is.. a solid NFL back.. I care less whom the back is, without the line play up front it matters little unless your name is Sanders, Payton or Brown.. that is how rare those backs are.

This difference between Grant of the last few games and earlier in the year is it seems like he is breaking some more tackles now and getting extra yards. Picking up more rushing yards on 1st and 2nd down is a huge help to Rodgers. I have no idea what exactly changed but he looks like a better back since we signed Green. Maybe it got him motivated or maybe Green had some helpful advice for him I don't know.

The difference I've seen with Grant ... he's keeping his head up and he's not getting hit behind the line of scrimmage as often.

I'm still not going back onto his bandwagon. He seems to do better with my fat ass off of it.

I've never thought Grant was the problem. Oh, I'd rather have a Hall of Famer, sure; but I think the team can succeed with a RB of Grant's quality.

If the OL is good enough.

But I also have to admit I was surprised when, before the SF game, I checked the stats at NFL.com and discovered Grant was already in the top 10 in the league in rushing. And now I'm pretty sure he's up to 9.

Barring injury, he should be over 1000 by game 13. (He needs just 57 yds/game to get there in 13, 85 per to get there in 12.)

Even if, as I fear, the OL of the last two games proves to have been a flash in the pan, that's going to be pretty darn good. 1000 yards doesn't mean what it did before the 16 game season was instituted, but 1000 in 12 or 13 does.

Who misses the days of Terdell Middleton, Eddie Lee Ivory, Darrell Thompson etc? Wow, did some of us see some bad football teams. Good thing these forums didn't exist then. I think it was Edgar Bennett who finally broke the 1,0000 yard barrier. Now it's a staple of our offense.

Would a premier running back hinder our offense? Ryan Grant gets the job done, but I still say he goes down too easy.

I was going to start a post to give Zero2Cool kudos about that observation. Watching the highlights video from this last game he seemed to have his head up, hence a couple extra cutback moves he had, and that play with 3:30 minutes left in the 4th where he ran into the stack, and then bounced it out for a nice 1st down run. All those plays it was like someone tied a string from the back of his head to his shoulder, was a very noticeable difference. Looks like the Packers coaching staff is reading Z2C's posts, for better or worse 😛

I feel sad every time I think of Eddie Lee. I think he would have been great were it not for the injuries. He had something special.
