Went back and watched the defensive plays again. Jones played alright and I am more than happy with him kicking Poppinga out of the backup spot. But he did not overly impress me. 7 tackles credited. 1 fumbled snap, 1 WR fell on a WR screen, 1 push out of bounds in coverage.

Jones was only covering twice, both times Crayton made the catch. One Jones was right on top of him, the second not so much but was able to finish with the push out.

Over all, Kampman is better in run support and getting pressure than Jones. Jones may have a small step on Kampy in coverage. As of now it is Kampmans spot and nothing has changed in that respect.

I'd say he has a large step on Kampy in coverage. LOL.

Besides two passes in one game, how much has kampman been thrown against? I can't think of other situations.

I don't know if he will be back next year. To me his is not a perfect fit for the 3-4. Neither are others doing very well in the system on other teams. Lamar Woodley is an example.

This last game was nothing to do with Jones play and more the play of everyone else. Barnett, Hawk and Matthews were getting crazy at the QB. Jolly Jenkin were having great games. We now have Bigby back full force, which is allowing Woody and Collins to make plays.

Kampman is doing much better in the system than I expected in the off season. Though people who expect him to have the same impact as he did in the 4-3 shouldn't hold his breath. Aaron is right on pace with other LOLB in the league on some pretty good defenses.

Though my guess is that he will be gone next year wanting to return to a 4-3 team. Because staying with us he should not expect the cash he could get, because his position is not going to be the headliner for the defense anymore.

The problem is Kampman's problems in coverage handicaps the way Capers can call the game. Green Bay has to do their best to disguise their coverage problems at OLB. It's not a coincidence that the Packers put on their best overall performance against a good quarterback without Kampman in this game. Certainly, Kampman is solid in run support (like you said) and obviously he's a good pass rusher too, but that doesn't take away from the fact that he's probably not a full-time player in this system.

Woodley, your example, had over 11 sacks last year in the same defense. Kampman has 2.5 right now. That quicker step makes a difference and clearly, Kampman is too uncomfortable right now, which is probably why he's not finishing the sack and just getting pressure.

11.5 last year for Woodley. And 3 so far this year, compared to Kamp with 2.5. And Kamp has more tackles. Why the difference, because last year, Pitt had a great defense, with the D player of the year across from him.

Look at Jarret Johnson in Baltimore also, another player which who is basically the same as Kampman. There is no reason Capers cannot run the defense with Kampman in, other teams do, he just needs to do it.

We get a game where Barnett, Hawk, Matthews, Jolly, Jenkins, Woodson, Collins all play like they did in Dallas, and you will see much more from Kampman than anybody expects.

Notebook: Jones Will Have Role

"While Kampman will reclaim the starting job hes expected to practice on Wednesday that doesnt mean Jones will be banished to special-teams duty. Kampman, who turns 30 on Nov. 30, had taken every defensive snap during the first seven games. Hes had a history of diminished production in the second half of the season. Over the last three years, only 12.5 of his 37 sacks came in the second half of the season."

Excellent analysis. Went back and saw the game, and the only real positive about Jones was his stoutness at the LOS. It was really surprising considering not only was he a rookie, but he is only 240 lbs.

Also, as for the pass plays: Jones was the one responsible for Williams big catch (the one where Woodson forced a fumble). He didn't get over to cover, and it was Nick who had to compensate. Otherwise, also agree with your analysis there.

Kampman is miles better than Jones right now, and I DO NOT think Jones played good enough to even be brought into consideration of getting some of Kamp's reps.

What I noticed is this.

We went with a lot more exotic blitzes. I think to cover up for Kampman not being in there and not having that designated DE/OLB. I don't think that Dallas was expecting that.

This was the 'playfull' defense that we saw in pre-season. A lot of unorthodox blitzing, people coming up from the secondary.

I don't think that Kampman is a real liability, I just think that Capers overrates him. Left without a choice, we brought multiple people. I just hope that we keep this going once Kampman does get back.

I agree - I think kampman is good at the blitz - so-so at the coverage. Its just what we saw is what capers fooled around with pre-season. Wierd how capers went all conservative when the season started.

I watched brad jones closely this game. Sure he did ok; but Id rather have kampman when it comes to the blitz. I almost thought I saw tompson in there too (but wasnt sure). Wierd how they had him with the #1's preseason for a stint.

Prediction: this week we see a 3-sack game from Kampman. 🙂
