Dom Capers when asked what was different about his approach to the Cowboys, he said the difference was players got home on the pressures where they didn't have the same success previously.

Al Harris doesn't agree. Harris told Jason Wilde that the Packers were more aggressive. When Harris was asked if it will continue, Harris replied, it better.

Those are not word for word, but that is accurate to the point. Which is this, the Packers were more all out against the Cowboys than in some of the previous games. Dom I don't know to be straight forward. Al, doesn't sugar coat anything.

I think it's somewhere in between. He obviously changed something. There where more guys coming to compensate for Kampman being out. I can't recall seeing a whole lot of these exotic blitzes with Kampman in. It's usually a 3-man DL with 1 OLB blitz.

That said, we did run a whole lot of the stuff we normally run, as well. We ran quite a few MLB cross blitzes. We run them just about every game. This time, though, they actually worked. That makes it look like we're playing a more aggressive defense.

I think Harris is right, we did play more aggressively, but that might not be due to the gameplan changing, Dom might've just called a blitz or 3 more this game by random chance. Just because he felt that he was in a good position.

Really glad to not see us bring a 3-man rush on 3rd and 10+ a lot, btw.

This Defense was definately more aggressive, no doubt about it.

http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/article/20091116/PKR01/311160144/1058/After-further-review--Breaking-down-tape-of-the-win-over-the-Cowboys

With Dallas all but abandoning the run, Capers sent five or more rushers on 18 of 47 snaps (38.3 percent) and a blitz pattern with one of seven inside linebackers or defensive backs on 28 snaps (59.6 percent). Perhaps the most surprisingly effective blitzer was dime CB Jarrett Bush, who came five times and had two pressures, one of them off a nifty spin against Choice.

Not exactly sure why it took Capers so long to bring out the aggressive gameplan but I hope to God he sticks with it. I mean just think about, I would say that during the CIN and both MIN games, this Defense was everything but aggressive. It seemed like we stayed back in coverage more often then sending 3 or 4 guys at the QB, clearly that killed us.

Part of the explanation is in the first sentence from that Press-Gazette snippet. The Cowboys inexplicably abandoned the run. They had a few successful runs very early in the game. After we shut it down a little bit they just abandoned it. Don't expect San Francisco to do the same -- they'll lean on the run against Green Bay. They like to run the ball, play good defense and keep it close. I think there's a way to be a pressure run-stopping defense -- but note that Capers [successful] approach to AP involved less blitzing (and huge games from Favre, unfortunately).

If we can be good on first and second down against the run on Sunday then I'd hope we're aggressive on some third downs. Just call a smart game. We even got pressure on a few four-man pass rushes against the 'Girls. Guys just have to show up and make some plays.
William Henderson didn't have to run people over. His preferred method was levitation.

I agree with Harris.

Capers had the "politically correct" response to the media. Harris is telling the truth.

Let's be real. I've watched 9 games. I'm not blind. I've been following the Packers hard-core since 1976 and have watched almost every game in the past 3 years.

Against the Cows, our D blitzed a lot more than usual. A lot of times this year, I've seen us rush 3 or 4 guys and sit back and hope for an INT while the opposing QB drops back to pass, contemplates what he wants to eat after the game, whips out the cell and txts his bestest buddy, then looks for an open receiver.

Not this game. We've had a lot of DB blitzes, much more than I've seen in the past 8 games. I know what I saw and Capers had the "safe" response to the media. Harris has the truthful one.

Sure, the timing was better, but we also used more blitzes and a better variation of them.

Capers after the game against them Cowboys:

"We were able to pressure more today because the game became one-dimensional," said Capers. "You can just go out and blitz, but if people are going to run the ball for big yardage on you you're foolish. We had some run pressures, they worked decently and it opened up more of our pass pressures."

Link (need to be Insider)

I agree completely with evad; the 49ers are going to run. To stop it is priority # 1.

Get them in third and long, and then blitz. No doubt Capers was more aggressive in the play calling as the game progressed, and we really need to see that aggression carry over.

It is very important that the defense play with the energy they did against the Cowboys too; we won our one-on-one matchups all day long.

I wonder what weight should be placed on the additional prep time the 49ers have had going into this game. I don't have a stat or anything, but it stands to reason that teams coming off a Thursday night game enjoy some of the same advantages of a team coming off of a bye.

Just thought I would throw that out there for something else to worry about. :thumbleft:

Stop Gore and we stop the Niners. I'm not too worried about our D against them. Crabtree is still a rookie and Smith doesn't have what it takes to beat us.

Their D is solid, but their O stinks. Our 3-4 should be able to stop Gore and I completely agree with you about getting them in third and long and blitzing. That should decimate their O.

Crabtree and Smith don't have the chemistry that that other duo have. It's pretty obvious. Their chemistry isn't "bad," it's just "not fully developed" if that makes any sense.

Crabtree joined later on in the season and it shows.
