The Pro Bowl drama begins

By Kevin Seifert

I started making a comprehensive list of every NFC North player who ranks in the top five of his position voting for the NFC Pro Bowl team, which is now underway. But then I realized some jokester must be stuffing the ballot on us: I counted 22 Minnesota players among the top five in their various positions. I wont name any names, but lets just say some players are more deserving of others. So here are some highlights of the fan voting, which ultimately represents a third of the total voting for this team:

* Minnesota quarterback Brett Favre (476,799 votes) and Green Bays Aaron Rodgers (191,144) rank No. 2 and 3, respectively, among NFC quarterbacks. New Orleans Drew Brees (539,228) is No. 1 overall.

* Vikings players who rank No. 1 in their position groups include tailback Adrian Peterson (529,319), fullback Naufahu Tahi (63,872), center John Sullivan (127,695), left tackle Bryant McKinnie (137,844), guard Steve Hutchinson (145,279), defensive end Jared Allen (212,605), nose tackle Pat Williams (135,669), kick returner Percy Harvin (143,880), placekicker Ryan Longwell (68,197), and special teamer Heath Farwell (54,830).

* The only Chicago players in the top five of their positions are center Olin Kreutz (No. 5, 59,581), linebacker Lance Briggs (No. 5, 66,579) and kick returner Devin Hester (No. 3, 56,721).

* In addition to Rodgers, other top vote-getters among Packers players include fullback John Kuhn (No. 3, 34,009), safety Atari Bigby (No. 4, 35,908), cornerback Charles Woodson (No. 3, 95,515), cornerback Al Harris, safety Nick Collins (No. 5, 22,913), linebacker A.J. Hawk (64,725), linebacker Aaron Kampman (No. 4, 67,453), placekicker Mason Crosby (No. 5, 32,722) and special teamer Desmond Bishop (29,033).

* There are no Lions players among the top five in their positions.

What does all this mean? Not a whole lot as we stand here in Week 11. Im not going to make this a weekly feature, but this at least gives us a jumping-off start for discussion next month.

Apparently, the Vikings are this years Redskins.

If you ask me, they should just stop this entire fanvote. Kampman? Tahi? Farwell? These guys get voted in on past performances and by blind fandom.

Most laughable one : Woodson is in third place, while clearly being the best corner in the NFC. Want to know who's in second place? Antoine Winfield. Next to not even being close to Woodson in skill, he's been injured for 3 games, as well. This is just ridiculous.

It's the fans that decide to go/watch it. Hell yeah they/we should get a 1/3 vote.

The Pro Bowl is a popularity contest. There is absolutely nothing riding on the game. My question is.. Why are people pissy about the voting?

If there were something important that rode on the game (like MLB's All Star game) then I can understand why people don't like it.

Until then, this is a non-issue.

I don't care that there's nothing riding on this game. It should just include the best players of that year. Apparently, fans are too thick to accomplish even that single feat. So, stop the voting process. Let the experts do it. I'm pretty sure that we won't see Tahi, Kampman and random ST dude in purple in Miami then.

I keep tellin' ya (internet equivalent of howling at the moon) ENCOURAGE the Vikings fans (and ALL fans, except our own) to the stuff the livin' crap out of the ballot box.

It DOES matter if a player goes the Pro Bowl.

It matters at contract renewal time.

I hope they vote their whole friggin' team into the Pro Bowl.

The other thing about getting lots of VIkings in the PB:

It'll help the Viking fans keep their self-esteem up. When we remind them in February that "you guys still haven't won a super bowl," they can say, "but at least we won the pro bowl."
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

Who is better than Woodson? That's right, nobody. I don't have a problem with too much else there. Would be nice to see Favre & Rodgers at the Pro Bowl. Of course, Favre most certainly wont show up as usual.

I'm not sure how the Packers OL is not in the lead for the voting. I can't imagine any AFC defensive player NOT voting for our OL. I mean, they do get a nice bonus if they win the Pro Bowl afterall.

I pray and hope during the Pro Bowl we don't see Brett Favre in front of Aaron Rodgers in the rosters. That would make me sick.

All that matters is the All Pro team, which Woodson and the kid from Oakland should be on. Corners that play in a Tampa cover two cannot be judged with lock down corners.

We have one all pro and that is Woodson. Fortunately we have many other very good players, just not players that are the best at their position.

As for Minnesota, I would put Kevin Williams, Hutchinson, Favre, Allen, and Butterfingers on the All Pro team. I really would like to turn the clock back 25 years on Peterson and see what he could do against players throughout the league that actually knew how to tackle. But since we can't we'll have to continue to watch him slip out of would be tackles and ramble for his big gains.
