I think anyone who follows this team closely enough can see that we are not devoid of talent, we are just being simply outcoached and outschemed nearly every week. I said it another forum, this team has absolutely zero sense of "team" comcept, it's like a bunch of guys playing pickup or 1-on-1 out there. There is zero accountability from the players or the coaches and like they say, the team takes on the personality of the Head Coach, which has become pretty clear, this team is too passive and aside from a few guys here and there, and there's no sense of urgency. I think we need to make a change at the top, Thompson needs to be just as aggressive as he was last year in his search for a Defensive Coordinator/Staff, and in the Draft. I would love to see him pick up Merriman in FA, the guy started out slow coming off his knee injury but it really looks like he's rounding into form with back-to-back 2 Sack games. We need a guy like Merriman, somebody who plays with passion and fire and will get the team fired up after a big play. I also think this team needs a disciplinarian at Head Coach. This team has been the youngest team in the league for I believe 3 consecutive years now and it shows by how undisciplined we continue to play, week in, week out, year in, year out. We need somebody that will get in guys faces and show some accountability when the players make mistakes, which is why I would kill to get Bill Cowher. Cowher has a prior relationship with Dom Capers and i'm sure he has ALOT of respect for him, so I don't think it would be a problem keeping Dom around. The same goes for Darren Perry(secondary coach) who played and started for 7 seasons under Cowher and Kevin Greene who started for 3 years under Cowher making 2 Pro Bowls in that span. Bill Cowher is the man I want to lead us back to our winning ways and reel in this young talented squad we have right now.

I think if this team doesn't at least finish 9-7 and show some improvement, Murphy is going to pressure Thompson to make some wholesale changes to his coaching staff at the end of the year. Even if the team finished around 7-9 again or so, I don't see Thompson being fired although he'll definitely be on the hot seat if he isn't already.

Ted Thompson did not hire Dom Capers or any of the defensive staff. Ted Thompson hired Mike McCarthy who hired the DC who collaborated with Mike McCarthy in hiring the defensive staff.

I like your Cowher comments. Now I hate you. Because now you said something that makes sense and now I'm wanting to hang my hat on it. Bastid! I'm gonna get my hopes up for nothing!! lol

lol thanks, I was going to do that but I was on a rant.

I know the Head Coach hires the staff but I think Thompson and Mccarthy definately worked together in the whole process of looking for Defensive Coordinators, they have a very close working relationship and I really think they made the decision together. But my point was that Thompson needs to continue the aggressive approach he showed last offseason and get this team a few more playmakers, specifically on Defense. To me this season has become 9-7 or bust, if we don't finish at least 5-3 during the last half of our schedule I think Mike McCarthy is gone, hell I hope he's gone even if he do manage to sneak into the playoffs, unless of course we make a miracle playoff run.

I think Mike McCarthy is already on the hot seat, but still think Ted Thompson's job is secure for now. Reading this, it sounds like he's more disappointed in Mike McCarthy than Ted Thompson.

This is my feeling as well. Thompson's inability to build a team better than Minnesota is on him. Those two losses are more of a referendum on him as a GM and talent evaluator.

He built a better team than the Buccaneers though. This one was a referendum on McCarthy.

If I had to cut ties with just one of them, McCarthy is my choice hands down.

Thompson has to be in the hot seat as well. His blunders at the safety position and his neglect of the O-Line have hurt this team bad. Although McCarthy will likely be obvious change I believe the root of our problems come from poor player acquisition and management, and I hope Murphy doesn't give Ted a pass too quickly.

If I were to guess, I'd say that McCarthy's just about dead. As a previous poster said, if the team wants to save their coach they're going to have to get very hot, very fast (and going a little further down Conjecture Alley, I bet they don't want to save him), and stay that way for the remainder of the season.

As for Thompson, my guess is that he'll get another chance, with the expectation the he WILL get better talent along the offensive line, safety position, and probably someone to take Kampy's OLB spot (unless they reverse field and go back to a 4-3 scheme, I think he'll be gone after this season). Obviously, the HC decision will be crucial for him, as well. He's definitely dropped the ball big-time in some areas, but the argument could be made that he's been going off what McCarthy's telling him (e.g. "Boy, I think you'll really be pleased with this Barbre kid - he's going to be special."). Now that it's clear the talent isn't there, we'll see what he does.

From an objective perspective, it's hard to say that Thompson has done poorly enough to warrant firing - most (not all - most) calling for his ouster are basing that on one decision and one decision only.

Bottom line: if he can fill the holes along that front line and @ the safety & LOLB positions, he's earning his keep. In my opinion.

This the Offensive Line is completely on Campen IMO, outside of Colledge and Spitz a tiny bit, these guys have not show any signs of progression under his watch. Campen is absolutely gone in the offseason, and if Ted fails to fix the hole at LT and depth at certain spots along the line, THEN I will absolutely agree with you that he has neglected the Offensive Line.

Q: Do you still have faith in Ted and Mikes program?

Murphy: "Yeah, I do. I still have confidence in Ted. Obviously for me, I work through Ted, and he and I are always in touch with each other, and I have a lot of confidence in Ted."

Q: Do you sense that Ted has that same confidence in Mike?

Murphy: "You'll have to talk to Ted, but my sense is that he does have confidence but (is) disappointed in where we are right now. We're all hoping that we can make the changes that are needed to get us to where we want to be at the end of the season."

"bigfog" wrote:

Anyone else see this? Asked about Mike, Murphy says nada. That doesn't bode well for McCarthy I think.

Agreed...these 2 quotes, esp. the latter, stood out like a fart in church. He tiptoed around giving any votes of confidence to Mike...writing appears to be on the wall, thank goodness!
