I don't really think that legalizing certain drugs would have the huge negative impact that some think it would.

Wait, what? Legalizing drugs gives the government control over people? Exactly how is keeping them illegal not exerting just such control over people's choices? How is flooding 55% of our prison population with non-violent drug offenders and incarcerating 25% of the world's prisoners not exerting control over the people?

You raise a lot of good points, Formo, but this one is a non sequitur.

Stop with your weird ass words that I don't know, dogg!!

It gives government more control over the money side of the issue. They can NEVER control people's choices.. People just will have to deal with the consequences of their actions/choices. Giving government the power to regulate, approve, trade, etc is what I'm against. Puts more money in their pockets. Money = power.

I'd far rather be paying taxes on a spliff, like I do on a glass of wine, than risk prison for wanting to light up once or twice a year (about how often I smoke a fine cigar with my father-in-law).

It's a myth that legalizing drugs would automatically lead to an explosion in their usage. We probably would see a moderate spike in usage for a while, until the novelty wore off, and then it would decline.

Think about it. Nicotine is completely legal, yet the number of smokers has been declining for years. Caffeine is completely legal, yet I use it maybe a couple of times a week (I'm partial to chocolate and tea). Alcohol is entirely legal, yet millions don't drink at all, and even I might have a glass or two of wine maybe three or four times a month. Maybe.

I actually heard someone say on the radio a few months ago, "If we legalized drugs, we'd have bus drivers using cocaine on the job." Preposterous. Legalizing drugs wouldn't make intoxication on duty permissible for any job. Just as it's illegal to operate machinery under the influence of alcohol, it would be illegal to do so under the influence of any other intoxicating drug. Institutions like the military or police force would still perform routine drug tests and punish offenders -- it's not safe to give a guy a gun when he's high. Transportation companies would still fire operators for using while on the road. Restaurants would still terminate cooks who were altered, if only for liability reasons.

It wouldn't make as big a difference as so many seem to think.

But then what's next? We already pay an absurdity of taxes as it is (I'm not even talking about percentages.. I'm talking everything we do is taxed). Next thing we do is give government more and more control. I don't trust our government as it is, and legalizing drugs and giving them that sector would open up a whole new can of worms I don't think will be healthy for anyone, whether you use drugs or not.

Again, we'll always have that personal freedom. No governing body will EVER take that away. They can oppress and they can regulate, but a person will always do EXACTLY what they want to do. We'll all have the chance to use whatever chemical we desire, we'll just have to pay the piper if he comes knocking.

Also, the way to keep our prisons empty, is not to put a band aid over a broken wrist. It's to set the wrist and give it ample time to heal with the right support. Work on our country's morals (you know.. don't kill, don't rape, treat others as we'd like to be treated.. the Golden Rule type stuff and not 'if it feels good, do it' stuff).

2 things:
1) I'd be much more happy with a consumption tax than an income tax. That way, everyone pays taxes including bank robbers, pimps, and drug dealers. Even better though is the IRS becomes obsolete and will have to be disbanded. Boo hoo. I won't miss them one bit.

2) Anyone know what Absinthe is? It just became legal. Know anyone who's tried it? Know anyone who's heard of it? Just became legal in this country last year. Nobody cares.

Nonstop is right about the novelty thing. Cocaine gets legalized, a few extra people try it, realize that it's overpriced for the thrill they get, and that's it. It goes back to having the same usage patterns.

Bars are trying like crazy to sell absinthe. Nobody's buying, because it's too damn expensive.

Marijuana is now legal here in California. You stubbed your toe, you can get a Doctor to prescribe you pot. Guess what? Same usage patterns. And no, I am not exaggerating. You can get medical marijuana for pretty much ANYTHING. If I'm not mistaken, people get it prescribed for anxiety all the time. Anxiety. Geez, everyone gets anxiety. That's as vague as you can get.

Heck.......then lets just legalize EVERYTHNG! I mean, people are going to do it anyway, right?
Legalize kiddie porn! Then we can tax the hell out of it! I mean, people do it now when it's not legal, right?
Legalize stealing! Then tax the crooks that steal. Yeah....that will solve our problems.
Legalize EVERYTHING! Then we won't have to spend money on courts, or prisons! People are gonna break the law anyway, right?

Just another step in the dumbing down of America.

Whoa. I knew this argument was coming and yes, I've heard it a million times.

Drugs are a victimless crime. If your neighbor smokes crack, it has NO effect on you unless he operates a motorized vehicle and plows into your house or runs over your dog. Or he becomes an addict and he steals your DVD player.

The vast majority of drug users don't have problems, as I've already stated. 2 million out of 70 million. I used to lift weights with someone who smoked crack. Did it daily for 3 weeks straight and quit because he got tired of it and it was effecting his performance.

Now stealing has a victim. HUGE difference.

This is something that you have to differentiate - crimes that involve hurting themselves vs crimes that involve hurting you. If some guy wants to shoot himself in the foot, how does that effect you? Stupid? Sure, it's dumb. But it doesn't effect you.
