And legalizing drugs takes away a lot of the thrill of them. I've heard the argument that we need to protect the risktakers from themselves. Bollocks. It's the risktakers who are using the drugs when they're illegal. If we legalize them, they'll move onto some other thrill.

Dude.. When I was Capt. Pot Head.. I could have cared less if it were illegal or not. I wanted to get fuckin' high. A percentage I believe would be the thrillseekers you are talking about, but I promise you there will be a bigger percentage that doesn't move on to the next thrill.

I already said it's victimless until you get into a position to injure someone else, i.e., operating a motorized vehicle or stealing to get your fix.

The thing is Cheesey, you claim to be anti-big government, but NOTHING is making the government bigger than the War on Drugs. (With the possible exception of the IRS).

I want government out of our lives completely. The hypocrisy of conservatives is just as bad as the hypocrisy of liberals. Both think they can be your parents. Both are wrong, wrong, wrong.

I want to make my own choices. Me, and me alone. I trust me. Not you. Not the government, but me. I just can't possibly see how smoking pot can even be compared to alcohol, which is LEGAL and regulated.

Now harder drugs, I can see the arguments vs alcohol. But not pot. Even with something like cocaine, I've seen paranoid cokeheads, but then I've seen alcoholics who beat their wives and children. I've been at more than one family reunion ruined by a stupid drunk. Which is worse? Alcohol kills something like 120k Americans a year (including driving deaths). Cocaine a very small fraction of that.

And yes, the numbers of people who do cocaine are much higher than you think. I was in a minority of my HS friends who never tried it in one of its many forms.

I am against government controling us. However, we have to have SOME kind of regulation, don't we? Isn't it the "government" that controls the police departments, who go after those that break the laws?
Are we supposed to get rid of the police.....and the fire departments?
Just take a chance that people will do the right thing?
Yes....there are bad drunks. EVERY family has them. So....because we "allow" that, we should allow MORE chances for people to use dangerous stuff?
The argument that we should, because then we could tax it. Uh.....doesn't that put the government in "control" of the illegal drugs too? Doesn't that add to "bigger government?"
You think legalizing drugs would fix the problems drugs cause? Making them more easy to obtain, and "legitimatizng" them will improve the abuse levels?
I don't see it that way.

I agree with your view on alcohol. The only reason that alcoholic drinks are socially accepted is because they have been woven into all civilizations from way back. It's something you really can't outlaw.

I like that the goverment is taking people in control against themselfs. Lets face it, a part of the population isn't capable of doing this themselfs. of course, people can get drugs illegaly pretty easily. Problem is, though, that you do have to go through some hassle to get them. Still, it isn't horribly hard, but it's better than just having it legalized.

And the people who are hurting most are usually no those that resort to drugs, it's the people around them.

The only drug I can somewhat agree with being legal is cannabis. Like mentioned quite a few times before, it's the safest one around. At least, I think it is. It'd be something you can tax like hell and still don't up the price too much from how much it costs now it's illegal. Like Zombie said, as well. It's not like that one's hard to get right now. Docter's perscriptions for everyone.

The War on Drugs as is has pretty much destroyed the 4th Amendment. You know how I feel about the Bill of Rights, all 10 of them. I'm not for leaving ANY of them out.

Will they fix the problems drugs cause? No. Not at all. The difference though is it will take the criminal element out of drugs. Drug dealers won't be making tax free money and you won't have them killing each other off and making the streets so unsafe.

We will still have to deal with idiot addicts. I'm not denying that at all.

They won't be any easier to obtain than they are now. Like I've already mentioned, sociologists conducted studies to prove it's easier for a kid under 18 to score pot than smokes.

The big government comes in the form of jack-booted thugs breaking down your doors because of a "hot tip." Like I said, the 4th Amendment is pretty much gone now because of the War on Drugs. Then they confiscate your property and you're guilty until proven innocent.

What's sick is there are so many cases of completely innocent people who took years to get their property back from the government because of the War on Drugs. What's also sick is we got millions of drug addicts in prison, who weren't violent criminals but become violent criminals after spending some time with real violent criminals in prison.

The cost to society has been horrendous. I think in this case, the Dutch have it right. That's why I really wanted to hear Rockmolder put in his 2 cents.

Which is not legalizing drugs, but having a gedoogbeleid (Read that you began to use the word as well, now, since you don't have one for it).

It pretty much means that it's officially illegal, but officers and the government don't do anything about it. And it only applies to cannabis. Not cocaine or anything. Mushrooms have become illegal, as well, recently.

There are some skewed rules here, though. You can have two plants for your own usage, if I recall correctly. You can't grow any for sales. You can sell them, though, at coffeeshops. How they're supposed to get it is more of a 'shush' business. No one wonders, no one cares. (Could be wrong, but should be something like this)

And the police is still coming down hard on people who grow cannabis themselfs. So it's not like it has stopped the police from being involved.

Like I said, I don't mind the drug. It's the tamest of all the ones that are out there. Including alcohol.
