The Green Bay Packers have signed receiver Jake Allen off their practice squad to replace injured Brett Swain, an NFL source said.

Allen, 24, spent all last season and the first six games this year on their practice squad. With Swain out and receiver Jordy Nelson expected to miss several more weeks because of a knee injury, Allen will be the Packers No. 4 receiver.

Swain injured his knee last week at Cleveland, will have season-ending surgery and be placed on injured reserve.

Hardly a shocker.. it provides playbook knowledge and he is a solid WR.

When did Swain get hurt anyway. I missed it.

Allen needs to step up on ST in order to fill in. Swain didn't have any catches this year, so the only loss is the ST role.

That's what I'm wondering. I see 6 games, 0 catches, 0 punt returns, 0 kickoff returns, 0 yards, 0 TDs for Swain, so, how did he get hurt?

ST, I asume. He also got thrown to once after Finley went down, if I recall correctly.

He's a good ST player. I can vividly remember that fake punt, with him diagnosing it pretty quickly to stop the RB before he got the 1st down.

He's a bit like Bush, I guess.

Like Pack93 said, this is hardly a surprise. I was still silently rooting for Heckendorf, but I knew that that was a longshot.

I like that we got Williams back on our PS. Don't know why we cut a guard to get another receiver on the roster, though. I mean, we could at least replace this player on a position of need with another player on that same position, right?

They said Swain got hurt on a kickoff. It's too bad for him though with all of the people we have going down he was probably looking to get some snaps at WR. Hopefully Jake Allen can help a bit I believe he is 6'4" so if he has some decent hands he may be helpful.

I hope he plays well. He needs to at least play at Swains ST level. Pretty big game for a first year guy to debut in.

I think he'll be ok as long as we aren't counting on him to make big plays on offense (which we won't be).

Not surprising. He was the most likely candidate to get added to the 53-man roster. His size reminds me a bit of Ruvell, so hopefully he can be that lanky 5th receiver we had when Ruvell was and make a few plays on offense and special teams.

There are many of the 1,800 players in the NFL who tolled on Practice Rosters and then grabbed opportunity by the throat. I hope they give him a locker right beside Ryan Grant.

I hope he catches the game winning score with :01 left on the clock that demoralizes the Vikings for years to come.

Thing is he was real raw coming out. I think he's got a chance to make some plays in the offense. He's been getting more practice reps lately too with all the injuries to Jordi and the other guys. Another secret weapon!

OG isn't, but the offensive line as a whole is. Lang was projected to be a guard, as well. Just like Kampman is a DE.

They might've seen something in the kid that made him a viable tackle. I guess it wasn't coming out, though.

What I would like to see is us bringing in some no-name blocking TEs or something, let them bulk up a little and convert them to tackles. If they can get the strength to come with the bulking up, they're usually really athletic. Something like Jason Peters.

I know, small hit chance, but it'd be worth it if you ask me.
