I've often wondered, how do we know that sports like the NFL aren't staged, while professional wrestling is? Why can't a game like professional football be scripted. My ideas on why this is so are rather nebulous and unformed (like all my other ideas, says Kevin), but they center around something having to do with chaos and skill. You can choreograph the movement two people will make each other in a ring. It's much harder to control, say, exactly where a ball will go when it's flying 43 yards downfield with a couple of people underneath it.
