Packers workout RBs Ahman Green and Dominic Rhodes
By Greg A. Bedard of the Journal Sentinel

Green Bay - The Packers worked out two veteran running backs today, including former Packers standout Ahman Green, according to an NFL source.

Former Indianapolis Colts and Oakland Raiders back Dominic Rhodes was the other.

Both players left without contracts.

Green, the four-time Pro Bowler with the Packers from 2000-06, was released by the Houston Texans in February after two injury-plagued seasons.

After signing a four-year, $23 million deal with the Texans, Green rushed for only 294 yards and three touchdowns in '07 and 260 yards and two touchdowns in '08. Knee injuries were a constant concern.

Green, 32, is currently the Packers' all-time leader in career yards from scrimmage (10,870) and 100-yard rushing games (33), and second in rushing yards (trailed Jim Taylor's club record by 45) and rushing touchdowns (53). Green also holds the club record for most rushing yards in a game (218 on 20 attempts against Denver on Dec. 28, 2003).

Rhodes, 30, set the league record for an undrafted rookie by rushing for 1,104 yards in his first year with the Colts in 2001 after starter Edgerrin James went down with a knee injury. He served as James' primary backup the next four seasons before splitting the starting job with Joseph Addai in '06 after James signed with the Arizona Cardinals.

In 2007, Rhodes signed a two-year, $7.5 million contract with the Oakland Raiders and he was promptly suspended four game for violating the league's substance abuse policy. He finished with Rhodes finished with 302 yards on 75 carries and a touchdown, and then was released after the Raiders drafted Darren McFadden in '08.

Rhodes then re-signed with the Colts and gained 538 yards in 15 games.

Rhodes signed a two-year contract with the Bills in '09 but was released at the 53-man countdown after gaining 64 yards on 19 carries (3.4 average) in five exhibition games.

Analysis

Obviously the Packers don't feel great about their backup running back situation, because that's the type of role either Green or Rhodes could fill.

Brandon Jackson played for the first time this season on Sunday against the Detroit Lions after struggling with a high ankle sprain. He rushed twice for 6 yards and caught one pass for 12 yards.

DeShawn Wynn is the other running back on the roster and he hasn't practiced since exiting the Vikings game with a wrist sprain. He first appeared on the injury report last Wednesday when he was ruled out of the Lions game with a knee injury. It was believed to be a re-aggravation of an injury that caused him to miss three training camp practices. Wynn's status is supposed to be determined on Wednesday, a source said.

The Packers do have Kregg Lumpkin on the practice squad.

Considering the Bills actually thought Rhodes was worthy of signing, Rhodes would seem the more realistic option. He's made his living as a third-down back. But he's also had other tryouts around the league and hasn't been signed yet.

Since both Green and Rhodes left without contracts, the Packers were most likely surveying all their options if Jackson were to hurt his ankle again.

The Packers could just be doing Green a favor. He still has a home in the area and has been here on and off since being cut by Houston. By working Green out, it could lead to other opportunities for him since other teams will see his name on the NFL wire.

Maybe there is some truth behind the "RUMOR" of trading for Jackson

This is the Packers way of thinking, we need more in here and before we do the Jackson deal lets see what else is around

What rumor? which jackson are we talking about here?

Damn Joe Arrigo started one where he said that Stephen Jackson for Grant and a draft pick

Steven Jackson to the Packers for Ryan Grant, a 2nd in 2010 and a conditional pick in 2011 (either a 3rd or 2nd depending on Jacksons production):

I had 3 different sources telling me that this deal is a no brainer for both teams.

Funny. I used that exact same phrase earlier in this thread.

Here is a possibility that also intrigues me:

The Packers have talked to the Rams about Chris Long. This deal makes sense, but I am not sure how serious either side is. In this deal the Packers would trade Aaron Kampman and a 2nd round pick for Long and the Rams 3rd round pick in 2010. Long has not fit in in the 4-3 like the Rams have hoped and is not the starter while the same could be said for Kampman in the Packers 3-4.

Keep this in mind, Chris Long was an outside linebacker at the University of Virginia and played his entire college career as a 3-4 linebacker.

I don't see any of these deals coming to fruition though.

That would be a sweet deal, and i am by no means a Grant hater, I've always said if he had a line to run behind he'd be fine. But I would love to see stephen Jackson here. As I read through all the deals listed i was left with the thought this was the only deal there with even a slim chance of happening. I no longer see them trying to deal kampman after seeing how he played being able to put his hand on the ground. I think the lions game was a key point for kampman and we will start to see some more production from him.
BAD EMAIL because the address couldn ot be found, or is unable to receive mail.

Well.....truth is....we need someone that can gain more then 2 yards. Yes, Grant got yards at the end of the game. But did NOTHING when the game was still on the line. And it's been that way all year. He just runs into the blockers and goes down. I REALLY thought he was gonna be something good.
Looks like it's not that way though.

It's amazing what consistent carries can do for a running game isn't it? End of the game, Lions knew we'd run, but we did it over and over and we get yards.

Yes, more me preaching we need MORE carries to have a running game before we can bitch about not having one. Give the running game a chance before burying it.

I agree with Zero to a point..

But I think another factor is that the Lions knew the game was over, so their effort was not there a sit was in the beginning..

I really want to see this happen. Although, it doesn't provide much hope. I just want to see an old face in the backfield.

I think Dominic Rhodes could be a good pick-up. It's not happening, but I would be so stoked if we got Steven Jackson. I'd be jumping up and down for joy. 🙏

dfosterf (22-Jan) : Was that site shutdown on your end or mine? No big deal, just curious
beast (21-Jan) : That way teams like Indiana and SMU don't make the conference championships by simply avoiding all the other good teams in their own confere
beast (21-Jan) : Also, with these "Super Conferences" instead of a single conference champion, have 4 teams make a Conference playoffs.
beast (21-Jan) : Also in college football, is a bye week a good or bad thing?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : The tournament format was fine. Seeding could use some work.
beast (21-Jan) : You can't assume Ohio State would of won the Michigan game...
beast (21-Jan) : Rankings were 1) Oregon 2) Georgia 3) Texas 4) Penn State 5) Notre Dame 6) Ohio State, none of the rest mattered
wpr (21-Jan) : Texas, ND and OSU would have been fighting for the final 2 slots.
wpr (21-Jan) : Oregon and Georgia were locks. Without the luxury of extra playoff berths, Ohios St would have been more focused on Michigan game.
wpr (21-Jan) : Zero, no. If there were only 4 teams Ohio State would have been one of them. Boise St and ASU would not have been selected.
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : So that was 7 vs 8, that means in BCS they never would made it?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : A great game. Give ND credit for coming back, although I am please with the outcome.
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : FG to make it academic
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : and there's the dagger
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ooooo 8 point game with 4 minutes to go!
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ooooooooohhhhhh he missed!
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Ooooo that completion makes things VERY interesting
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Game not over yet
beast (21-Jan) : Oh yeah, Georgia starting quarterback season ending elbow injury
beast (21-Jan) : Sadly something happened to Georgia... they should be playing in this game against Ohio State
beast (21-Jan) : I thought Ohio State and Texas were both better than Notre Dame & Penn State
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame getting rolled
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : Ohio State just got punched in the gut. Lets see how they respond
