I don't know all the details of this, but from what I hear is the investment group looking to buy the Rams didn't like the 'loudness' of Rush's personality, and apparently considered it too strong and thought it could be a problem with them getting the ownership.

That's the story after the fact. The thing that stands out to me is that they asked him to join their group because of the money. As soon as controversy reared its head, they threw him overboard. If he's too polarizing a figure, don't ask him to join your group to begin with.

I agree that it's a bad decision from a PR standpoint to choose Rush. I agree with some of his politics, but not all of them (and oftentimes not his methods). But he WAS used for his money then thrown under the bus when things went bad. And if you want to take Rush's word for it...

I said to him at this meeting, Are you aware of the firestorm? He said We wouldnt have approached you if we hadnt taken care of that, said Limbaugh, a conservative favorite who is reviled by many liberals.

Limbaugh added that Checketts had told him his involvement had been cleared at the highest levels of the NFL.

Thanks for the info/sources. I did catch the part where he was mainly used for the money. As when I saw a little bit of this on ESPN, they were talking about how could the investment group compensate for the lack of funds now that Rush is out.

You bring up a very good point with the quote and such.

I'm conservative, but not to the extent of Rush/O'Reilly. And while I would personally love to see Rush as an NFL owner, his methods leave much to be desired.

Like you said.. Why even consider him if his 'firestorm' would cause an issue?

I am most certainly glad that he isn't backing down, though.

I don't agree, Zero. Had he actually made racists statements, then i'd say he deserved to be stopped from being a owner. But that wasn't the case at all.
Some people disagree with his political stance, and because they scream and throw a tantrum, Limbaugh gets pushed out.
It's just not right.

You're not everyone. Not everyone thinks like you. Also, not everyone searches out the meaning of the words from people. If the media paints you with a ugly brush, you're going to look ugly. Look at Eminem. Anyone who blasts him is uneducated on his motives. Do you read about how he adopted his ex wifes sisters daughter? Do you read about the good things he's done? Nope, you hear about all of the negative lyrics he sings. Why does he say those things? Because people buy it! If you ever listen to his music, listen to the whole album. You'll be surprised to find out how much of his antics are geared towards making a dollar ... why? To give his daughter the life he never had!

He knows the more outlandish stuff he says, the more pub he gets. More pub, more money. More money, better life for his kids.

I'm not saying he's a saint, he's not, he's done a lot of bad an stupid things. But his overall image shouldn't be as negative as it is. He's doing a lot more than a lot of us are willing to consider doing. The public just doesn't hear about it because ... why? Bad news sells, good news doesn't.

Same thing with Rush. I'm sure the man has done a plethora of good deeds, but what do we hear about? The racy things he says.

Is it right to not let the man purchase a football team because of the public perception or things of that nature? No, but remember who will be buying the tickets for those games and also endorsements, etc ...

I've also read that this was a stunt by Rush to get back into the spotlight and well its working. He had to know he was going to get turned away. I mean, seriously, he was fired/forced to resign from ESPN after his McNabb comment. Now look ... he has people saying 'oh cmon wheres American going, isnt this a free country let the man own a team' and jumping to his side.

Be no fool about it, Rush is very intelligent. At least, from what I've seen and know of the man.

The thing is Zero.......there are alot more people that agree with Rush then you might think. So if they are geared towards selling tickets. maybe him being part owner might help more then you think.
There's a reason he has a talk show and it keeps making money. If people didn't listen to him and agree with him, he would have been off the air a long time ago.
Also, Rush never pretends that his opinions are anything but that. His opinions. So i guess as Americans we can no longer voice what we feel, for fear of stepping on the toes of the ultra sensitive.
I don't agree with everything the guys says. But alot of stuff i do agree with. I am also one that will voice my opinions on things. And many people on this site i have had disagreements with. Yet most of them, i respect and enjoy talking with.
I am outspoken. That comes from YEARS of keeping my mouth shut, and allowing people to walk all over me. So i also rattle some cages.....but there are just some things that i feel i SHOULD stand up for.
I'd like to see Rush sue the NFL for this. Thats what i would do if i were him. Talk about discrimination. Face it.....if he wasn't a white guy, Jesse Jackson and AL Sharpton would be ALL over this. But he IS white, so it's ok i guess.]
Reverse discrimination is alive and well in the U.S. I've seen it personally MANY times.

Rush's politics aside, the media and the NFL are both to blame for saying he made a quote about slavery that was never true. What really bothers me is that he was accused of a false racist comment that he never made and that is impossible to defend.

It is much more difficult to prove one is not a racist as opposed to the contrary. Admittedly, Limbaugh's comment of McNabb was a bit absurd. On the other hand, I have always been opposed to the idea that a running QB can succeed better than an effective passing QB; irregardless of skin color. I think the problem with his quote back a couple years ago quote was he said "black" as opposed to "running."

Steve Young and John Elway used to drive defenses nuts with their running abilities. A QB who can both run and pass is ideal. That's one reason I'm such a huge Aaron Rodgers fan. I've always been a fan of mobile QBs and have always hated the Peyton Manning pocket type QBs with a passion.

This isn't golf. Freaking move.

The comments Rush made about McNabb were beyond absurd and as far as I'm concerned, no amount of apologies would get him on my good side about football. He's an idiot (in regards to football).

That said, it still shouldn't disqualify him from owning part of a football team. I could care less what peoples' beliefs are. If I'm selling my house, the buyer doesn't have to like my skin color, religion, or haircut. They just better come up with 20% down and a prequalified letter from a reputable bank.

The NFL doesn't need Rush. They are popular enough without him. And they have every right to pick and choose who they want to let in; just as Augusta National has the right to not admit any women into their club. There are also private fitness centers women go to that do not allow men.

None of these "clubs" are publicly funded, so they can do whatever they want.

I bet if the rest of the owners in the NFL came out and were HONEST with their opinions on things that you would find ALOT of them that you would want kicked out of the NFL.
Fact is, most of these guys won't BE honest and say how they really feel about things.
But a guy says how he really feels on something, and people want him tarred and feathered.
At least we KNOW what Rush believes in, whether you like him or hate him.
Go figure.
I do see what he meant as far as McNabb. I'd take it a step farther and say what a big deal everyone made when there were 2 black coaches coaching the 2 Super Bowl teams. Who the hell CARES what their skin color is? As long as race is used to single out people, for good or bad, racism will be kept alive.
I like people based on who they are. NOT what hue their skin is.
But thats just me i guess.

That's what Rush Limbaugh does for a living. He makes controversial statements to get everybody riled up, and it boosts his ratings. He doesn't say these things because he is more "honest" than others(the NFL owners as you said) He does it to make a living.

Why would the NFL owners want to give their opinions on controversial topics? What good would it do them?

What it has done for Rush is it has made him millions of dollars. But you can't be as polarizing as him and expect everyone to like you. THAT'S the trade off.

Real reason is that Rush would demand plays that run only to the right, and that would never work..

I had the same thought Jim Rome expressed a few days ago: Limbaugh knew full well he would never be allowed to own a team. This whole affair was purely a publicity stunt. And it's worked perfectly: Whether he was rejected outright or ended up withdrawing his candidacy (which is what I predicted he would do), he has garnered untold millions in free publicity.
