Here's a little blast from the past that really taught me the true meaning of rivalry. One of the first Packer games I went to in the 80's was at Lambeau Field against the Bears. We all know that this is the greatest rivalry in pro sports. So, Lambeau was hopping that Sunday afternoon.
My dad and I got to the game early to walk around and see some pre-game warmups. I remember the pre-renovation bathrooms at the field. During the really cold games, you could stand outside one of them and just watch the yellow steam rising out of the door. Ah, gotta miss the basics of stadiums past. Nothing but football, beer and brats. But, I'm wandering away from the story...where was I.
We found our seats about halfway up the end zone to watch warmups. The players left the field after warmups and we (as well as many other fans) moved over to the rail where the Bears would be running back onto the field for the start of the game. At that time, the away team entered the field from the middle of the endzone (not sure if that's still the case...I haven't paid attention where the away team comes in from since the remodel).
We waited for about 15 minutes and then saw some of the Bears players coming back down the tunnel. What happened next is still one of the my favorite Packer/Bear moments. Some of the fans started to yell at the players...nothing that needs to repeated here...you can figure that part out. Then, two of the guys standing on the other side of the rails started to pour their beer on the players, with a nice toss of the empty cups to top it off.
The players kept running onto the field and I don't remember either of those guys getting kicked out. I wonder if the covers over the player field entry tunnels were created after that? Ah, probably not...it was just the Bears getting soaked.
Little memories like that make every Packer/Bear game fun for me. It's a passion to hate the Bears and us Packer fans do it well.
