I mean......how stupid is that? It in no way resembled a real gun, NO ONE would mistake it for a real gun. But "no tolerance" allows them to "not think" for themselves.
Another proof "political correctness" being a stupid idea.

Is it really "political correctness" or is it fear of our legal system.

This kid by all accounts made an innocent mistake, by letting him off with 3 days they are now setting a precedence for the rule based on perceived intent.

So what happens when if another kid made the same mistake?

They have to either weigh in intent on the punishment and face probable litigation from another kid that got a stiffer penalty or use the same time duration for punishment. Intent is a hard thing to prove.

It creates a loophole for some jagoff to fall through.. because we are a sue first society where even the absurd is challenged in the court of law.. IE McDonald's coffee is hot.

I agree that they made the right decision in this case, but I can see why there is a clear cut penalty out there from a higher branch.. if this school makes this decision liability is limited to them alone.

In the end.. blame the freaking lawyers.

It IS "political correctness". They do the "no tolerance" rule because they are afraid that SOMEONE will say that someone was picked on because of race. So they throw out this blanket coverage that allows NO room for actual THINKING. They are simply covering their asses.
Now....does there need to be rules? YES. And as far as I know, it has always been against the law for a kid to bring a gun to school. Or ANY kind of a REAL weapon.
But cases like i brought up, where a little 3 inch plastic rifle, that would be NEVER confused with a real gun (unless you are only 9 inches tall) that a kid gets treated like a criminal......thats just lame.
Might as well outlaw baseball bats too. They can be used to bash someone's head in. Or books.......better outlaw any hard bound books. You could poke your eye out with the corner of one. Sound crazy? Give it time....i wouldn't doubt if they do it.

the school my kids go to is locked immediately after the bell rings. there are cameras pointed at the doors & you can only enter after buzzing AND if the person on the other end of the buzzer knows you & knows why you're there. i'm very happy with that. it doesn't matter that we live in a relatively small town - sex offenders & crazies are EVERYWHERE!!

i know the 'better safe than sorry' mentality has gotten a little out of hand when common sense could have prevailed BUT the safety of kids while they're in school is of the utmost importance. these rules/policies were put in place for a reason & i'd guess it's a combination of fear AND pc. my problem is with the zero tolerance part - there are always gray areas.

Great point Illy.
Like i said, had anyone taken the time to think it through and do the right thing, there would have never been the blown up mess it turned into.
We need rules, as you said, there are way too many crazies in the world today. But we also need to be able to allow people to use their brains.

Another example of political correctness.

When I grew up, I brought a knife to school every single day. No, not a folding camping eating knife like this kid had but a real knife. Boys should always have knives and cigarette lighters.

It's also an example of the pussification of American males. They don't like handy males.

Chances are the parents didn't know the kid took it to school.
Here's what SHOULD have happened in a world where common sense is "normal".
Zach brings his camping tool to school to eat with. Teacher sees it. Takes it away from Zach, tells him he can't bring it to school because it has a knife on it, then tells him he will get it back at the end of the school day. Then she tells him "If you bring it to school again, you will be expelled from school." Then said teacher calls up his parents and tells them what happened.
problem solved.
No need for "school boards", national news, or anything.
COMMON SENSE ends problem.

This is exactly what I was thinking - who made such a big deal about it in the first place. Even if the parent's knew he took it to school - they may have just not even been thinking about the fact that there was a knife on it. Talk with the parent's first, when it's obvious there was no malicious intent.

Finished reading the whole thread now. My daughter's school is locked once school is in session as well. I have no issues with that at all. No one can get in without checking in at the office.

Want to know outrageous? Yesterday, our elementary school was closed because a mercury thermometer was broken and some of the stuff leaked out - for students safety. They had to get environmental services from another place to up a cubic centimeter of mercury from the spill from that little thermometer. Is this little bit of mercury that harmful? We are a bunch of crybabies for sure arent we?

Mercury is highly toxic stuff. I don't know if all of that was needed, though.

All of this is not only because of political correctness, though. It has just as much to do with people themselfs. What do you think that would've happened if one kid did get poisoned? Or accidentaly stabbed by that camping tool? The school would've had a huge lawsuit handed to them in no time.

I mean, that doesn't justify all of this, but this comes from both sides. I sure wouldn't want those kids to have any weapon-like things with them if it could realistically end up losing me thousands of dollars.

Do NOT fool around with even one drop of Mercury. A cubic centimeter is enough to cause some severe problems if touched or ingested. I don't know the size of your school, but to me, they did the right thing. Residual effects, (like we know in fish) can be just as harmful.
