I think its due to a lack of talent. Last year our pass rush was almost non existent. That, combined to numerous late game failures, led to the entire defensive staff being fired.

This year, new defensive staff, and we still can't get any pressure.

Well, if Tezzy's numbers are correct, it's a bit of both. I just don't want to label it as bad coaching.

You can't expect to get a lot of pressure when you bring just 3 for 56% of the time. It's the equalavent of letting your 4-3 DE drop in coverage and switching your other DE with a DT. You won't often get pressure that way.

That said, I think that Dom has been focused on stopping the run a whole lot more than on getting to the passer. Maybe he grew a little overconfident in his D-line, since he was and is practicing against our O-line in practice.

I think that we'll see some adjustments. Maybe bring a little more delayed blitzes up the middle. You have the added advantage of your linebackers being able to play the run, but still put some pressure on the QB when he's passing. As long as they don't bite too hard on the PA.

Combination. I don't think you can stick on Mike McCarthy or TT. Its both of them. The talent Ted Thompson has given him isn't "great" but its not bad either. And Mike McCarthy has done a decent job at coaching but then again not great.

I think really good talented players make up for coaching sometimes (FOR EXAMPLE - CHILLY - though I think Chilly is also the GM there). And vice versa but in this situation both have failed in this regard.

I think it is simply a process by which we are 4 games into a new system. I know I know what about denver right??? Well Denver has a a few better fits which I believe have played in a hybrid scheme at certain points. Also our safety play has been found wanting in the Blitzburg model safety play is the key in any zone scheme.
As a byproduct coaches I think shy away from gut blitzes more because our safeties can be out of position..
Conversely the biggest thing in 3 of our four games we have went against midline passers outside blitzes work better on scramblers who will (see Rodgers) work into pressure sometimes. More pressure has to be dedicated to the middle against midline guys when under center.
I am therefor I think.

Agree with jbshell - the defense is about where I would expect it to be at this stage of the transition. How Denver's done so well with their transition isn't something I'm qualified to determine, but I certainly didn't expect the Packers to be aces in their new scheme right away.

Some of it could be talent, but I'm not sure about that. Kampy got very good pressure on Favre in the last game and I've seen very little that I don't like in the DL's play.

It's still a transition, and it's one they're still in the midst of - additionally, the transition is being made harder by the offense's inability to stay on the field.

Id say its a bit of both but mostly on the coaches. What happened to the Cwoodsen blitzes? He was tearin it up during the preseason.. I think he had 2 sacks against the cards. I know it was just preseason but if it worked then why not try it now? I can only think of 1 time where they sent Woodsen on a blitz.

Coaching. I think with better calls made they would be more successful.
One of the adjustments has to be getting Kampy in there more often. They are just messing with him.

"We definitely want to get more opportunities for him to rush the passer," McCarthy said. "The only thing that we need to do a better job of is giving him more opportunities to rush the quarterback. I think all the other aspects of the position, I think he's done an excellent job."

I agree, let the man rush the freaking QB!
11 on offense
11 on defense

Match Kampman with the QB, period. Let him kill the QB, period. KILL THE QB KAMPMAN, period.

With the two options given I would have to say coaching. The problem I see is that we have been bad against the run early. Which means that the defensive play calling is going to swing more to the rush protection which lessens the pass rush.

We need to quit running the 2-5 alignment and get those big bodies in the middle.
The world needs ditch diggers too Danny!!!

One thing that gets me excited is that our staff had 4 weeks of film to evaluate during the Bye and they will certainly make some necessary changes.

What they could be IMO...

-Clay Matthews replaces Brady Poppinga in the base Defense

-Desmond Bishop, BJ Raji, Jeremy Thompson see an increase in snaps.

-Brad Jones is given a couple of snaps a game to showcase his pass rushing ability, the dude can flat out run, I think he can be a nice player.

-The CBs play a bit more press coverage, Harris just looks uncomfortable in a zone-based coverage scheme.

-Pressure...Pressure...Pressure...playing more press coverage allows us to bring the heat more often.
