Jordy does pretty well on kickoffs, i wouldn't mind seeing him there. But i think Blackmon is an excellent punt returner.

Blackmon had 1157 yards on 55 returns last year. Thats roughly 21 yards per attempt.

The biggest difference between the two, is Jordy usually just runs. And Will is always looking to make a big play. If he would just learn to hit the lane and run hard, he would have longer returns.

But I totally understand you wanting to have someone who gets us the field position opposed to the big play.

Jordy is a lot harder to take down also. A lot of times on a kick return just getting past the 1 guy can get you another 20 or 30 yards. Our kick return team just didn't seem to get us good field position when we needed it last year. I don't have a problem with Blackmon at all and I love him on punt returns but I think there's an opportunity to get more out of our kick returns and we should take it.

I can't really speak to a lot here because I'm not very knowledgeable about all of this, but I think I can make a comment about the running game.

Look at the O-line. I don't need to expand on that hopefully. So much of the running game has to do with O-line play. I would even venture to say it has more to do with the O-line than with the strict talent of the running back. There was more that one instance against the Rams where Grant would have the ball and a lineman would be out in front of him, maybe 10 yards. The only problem was that there were defensive players between them.

I don't know if this is a Ryan Grant problem or an O-line problem. Maybe Grant isn't following his blockers closely enough. Maybe he's being too patient about letting gaps develop and he needs to add a little more power to his game. Or maybe the O-line is too aggressive in getting down field. Maybe they need to pick their blocks a little better and understand where Grant is in relation to them. Or maybe we're simply not really built for the zone blocking system.

I'm not sure about the contract situation. I think Grant is the best RB on the team and he proved in 07 that he deserves the contract he got. I just think the O-line hasn't been good enough to really let him show it.

"Silentio" wrote:

It's probably a combination of things. That said, I think most of the blame should be on the o-line. There are countless situations where Grant gets the handoff and the defensive penetration is instant. It feels like Grant is either getting 6+ yards or less than 2. His average may trend out at about 4 yards (or less) but rarely are there 3 yard runs.

One thing I'd like to see more of is the outside runs. Some of the sweeps and tosses have worked so far this year, in the few times we've run them. Key for Green Bay's run game is going to be mixing up the playcall and, as in '07 fashion, getting our pass game going first.
William Henderson didn't have to run people over. His preferred method was levitation.

It's kind of hard for the running back to get good yardage when there are defensive linemen on him as soon as he gets the ball. I think EVERY offensive woe we have this season is directly attributed to the O-line....or lack thereof.

And I definitely think Bishop should be starting over Barnett...just my opinion of course. So that would lead me to believe that the topic of this thread might be a resounding "yes" in some instances.

I agree with this. The few times they ran it outside last week we saw positive yards. Do successful runs outside free up inside runs by stretching the defense across the field?

I think defenses are pretty read and react, but it makes sense to think that mixing up the gap of attack should keep the defense a little more on its heels.

You know what I'd LOVE to see Green Bay run effectively? The draw runs. Dallas runs them to perfection. Granted, a big part of their success is that they have enormous lineman who excel as pass blockers. But the draws also work for Dallas because they have a potentially dangerous passing game. On the game the other night Dallas cut up Carolina with the draw.

I don't dislike our playcalling. I actually like it a lot. I just don't like the execution so far. Maybe we need to incorporate more screen passes and draw plays. These plays are pretty much explicitly designed to put lineman in an advantageous position -- something a poor o-line could use more of.
