When you have issues with protection, a lot of people are responsible, so probably "all of the above" is the best way to answer your first question. I keep hearing that they can fix those mistakes, but it's hard to imagine the repairs weren't made somewhere between Antwan Odom's first sack and his fifth one last week. As for the zone-blocking scheme, it's not for everyone. You'd better have the right type of athletes to carry it off, and if you're putting too much emphasis on finesse, it can compromise your overall line play. I tend to believe that bigger and stronger linemen tend to do a better job in both pass protection, especially with a QB such as Aaron Rodgers, and run blocking.

My question finally got through once on NFL.com. Reading between the lines, you can pretty much see that he doesn't have a whole lot of trust in the zone blocking scheme either, anymore.

Makes you wonder why we keep on using it. Is it because we have too big a stable of finesse O-linemen in by now or is it just stubbornness?

If you're losing your battles, it doesn't matter if you're zone blocking or power blocking.

The main difference in performance as I understand it is that you have a better chance for explosive plays in the ZBS system, while the power blocking scheme is all about churning out yards in moderate chunks.

Can someone explain to me why we're talking about the ZBS SYSTEM as a culprit for our TACKLES getting beaten 1 on 1 for sacks? It seems to me that you have that tackle/end matchup no matter what system you are using, unless you help him out with a TE or RB chipping.

Add to it, it has little to do with pass protection anyway..

Face it.. we are a pass first team under MM.. so having athletic lineman should be a blessing in pass protection where most predominantly you are using your feet more so that your upper body. Watch almost every sack that we have given up this season, it illustrates the issue well, we are not keeping a firm base and which is leading us to leaning and the ends are chewing it up.

Very similar to the footwork of playing defense in basketball.. feet wide, shoulders square to the opponent and being able to move laterally at will.. watch Colledge this past weekend.. he got his shoulders (weight) to far over his left foot leaving the inside open to a swim and punch.. Odom had it easy, he used Colledge's weight against him. To his defense, you could see that Colledge's was struggling pushing off with his foot... as a defender in a pass rush.. your eyes light up when you see him leaning.. then you set him up to use it to get to the QB.

Barbre and Colledge have prototypical size for playing tackle.. athletic, long arms and according to the weight room strong.

Watching the tape again (thanks Zero) both are getting beat first with the feet, then opening a shoulder and it is over.. I care less if they could bench press a freaking tank at that point.. they were beat.

These O-linemen need to do some type of close fighting martial arts in the offseason, if they don't know how to drop and center their weight.
