I frankly don't understand how Bigby made the roster again this year. Does this man ever go 4 consecutive weeks without an injury? For all their talk about availability being paramount, Mike McCarthy and Ted Thompson sure seem to make exceptions for certain players. I'd far rather have a player of decent talent with 95% availability than a player of stellar talent but only 40% availability.

I agree with this but you can't just cut someone because they were injured in the past. You have no idea if they are going to get hurt going into the season. What if we cut him and he went somewhere and had an amazing year how stupid would Ted Thompson and the front office feel and look. IMO he was the best option at the position and would have been furious if he was released.

i still think our best bet is putting jolly at safety.

Hey, so far this year, he's got more INTs than Bigby and Rouse combined. :thumbright:

With how well Woody plays the run and blitzes, I'd actually enjoy him at SS. We have depth at CB, whether it's quality or not is to be determined with play on the field, and no real alternatives if Rouse has any issues. Hoping Rouse can step in and lay some more wood like he did in the Bears game.

Well, he has been hurt now, so I don't think it would be untoward to at least have discussions about the possibility of looking of alternatives. I'm sure that has happened in some fashion behind the scenes, though the Packers very noticeably have not worked out any safeties.

Rouse the starter eh, here we go again like last year. Our secondary is starting to get depleted again. Hopefully we can get a glance of Derrick Martin of what he is capable off. I have to admit Packers D Line and LB's looked really good against the BEARS.

Word, I just meant at least we did try out one safety.

Hopefully Rouse is ready for a 3rd year emergence.

We have no one as good as Landry or Reed. I don't understand the fascination with Bigby by Packer fans. He is so slow and can't cover anyone.

People complain that Ted Thompson has not addressed the offensive line enough, but this position he has been incredibly poor at. Eugene Robinson put our D over the top in the mid 90's, I just wish something other than Smith would have been done this year.

"DakotaT" wrote:

Agreed. What really gets me is the comparisons between Bigby and Troy Polamalu. Do you know what they have in common? Long hair. And it's not even the same kind of long hair. Polamalu's hair is frizzy, and Bigby has dreads. True, Bigby can occasionally put the wood to somebody, but he's so slow that it almost never happens. Polamalu is extremely fast.

I also agree that Ted Thompson has had problems getting good safeties. Collins and Rouse were second and third round picks, so you can't say Thompson hasn't tried, but Collins is still inconsistent and Rouse is not yet close to living up to his potential.

Folks - don't worry too much. The Giants won the Super Bowl a few years back with VERY average DBs. Woodson and Harris are perennial Pro Bowlers and Collins was in it last year. If Rouse is our only weakness in our secondary, I feel pretty good about our secondary.

Rouse hits like a ton of lead. He may blow some coverages, but if the QB is on his back, it doesn't matter.

Capers' 09 D is designed to disrupt, cause confusion, and generate turnovers. We got 4 INTs against da Bears. You ain't seen nothing yet.

CBs getting sacks, LBs (both inside and outside) getting sacks. It would be like trying to box a guy who has four arms.

In 2009, you can win a SB with a pedestrian Safety.

Yep. Especially with the amount of subs that we do and the other cover/ballhawk safety we have on the field. Collins makes some mental mistakes from time to time (See Hester TD), but overall, he's a solid player and someone who can play cover one.

Like said before, you build your defense to your strengths, not the other way around. Bigby and Rouse both aren't great in coverage. They are pretty decent in run support, though. Asuming Rouse can actually tackle. You'll see that incorporated into the playbook some more.

Next to that, if he has to play deep zone, Collins will usually be there to back him up. And if he is alone out there, that usually means that we're blitzing and there shouldn't be any time to exploit one safety.

Supposedly they dropped smith cuz he blew coverage; but we putting rouse in there. I hope to see the new guy martin play some; I bet he's eager to show his stuff to the team.
I think he did play some ST thou (heard his name called).

-off topic- but I want to see quinn in the lineup this week ... lets see some quinn blocking for wynn/grant (notice wynns name first - wouldnt even have grants name there if jackson wasnt sitting home).

With all this hand wringing, I am going to predict that Rouse makes at least one big play this week

We probably won't see Quinn for awhile, though, unless one of the other fullbacks gets hurt.

Do you really think Wynn is better than Grant? I think Grant is way better.

Bigby and Rouse seem very similar to me, I don't think the Packers will miss Bigby. Both of them are below average in coverage and take a few too many chances.

I wonder how long it'll be before Derrick Martin is ready to play safety and, indeed, if the Packers actually plan for him to be more than a special teamer.

I'm actually more concerned about Bigby than Rouse to be honest. I think Rouse is decent enough playing Safety, and with all the changes in our Defense this year, I think it would work to his advantage. Bigby on the other hand, I've never been too keen on him ever since. I don't really know why that is but I've never been impressed by him and he hasn't really shown much whenever he plays. Maybe there's a tackle or two but other than that, he's been bland imo. And there's the injury issue as well. Seems like he always has injuries. I'd much prefer guys who can line up at every play, so I would like to see how Rouse would fare given this chance to try and maybe even earn a starting job at Safety.

And even if he doesn't do as well as I'd hope he would, the bright side is that the competition would hopefully make Bigby work twice as hard and light a fire in his belly to play much better or be more accountable because of the possibility of losing his job.
