If you are just trying to draw the penalty, then why not just snap it as normal to the punter on a quick count.. you will still be rewarded the penalty. So I still have a little question on where this blame lies.

Now, if they were trying to take advantage of some confusion on the punt return team.. that I might buy.. but just to catch the penalty by taking a couple of seconds to get the back on page.. seems counter productive in a sense.

I understand the freeplay thing completely. However it is about down distance and field posistion. There are times in a game to make a risky call. Say 4th and 11 on the opponents 40 sure why not.
4th and 11 inside of your own 30 come on and a direct snap really. 4th and 3 ok why not try it ur odds of making it are much better from a situational stand point.
I can see the long snapper doing a rushed snap to the punter in that scenario not to the upback just plain craziness.

To rush snap to the punter just to draw a five-yard penalty hardly seems worth it. But a fake punt, if it succeeds, is potentially a game-changing play. It's just like when a QB sees that a defender was offsides, so he throws a bomb. He doesn't hand off up the middle. This is a pretty routine thing for a QB to do. But he has to be absolutely sure that the other team was offsides, and was not drawn offsides. I've never seen a QB blow that call. But the Bears' long snapper blew it. Clay Matthews got off the field long before the ball was snapped.

I recall when Collinsworth concluded that the play was made by the veteran long snapper for the bears. I also think the bears should keep on trying to take advantage of cute plays and less on fundamental execution so we can have an easier win in Soldier Field.

I just think the look on the ref at 17s says it all about the play.

Actually, it was a good call on the part of da Bears. I will defend Smith here. The fault was in the execution. The RB took too long to pay attention. If he had been paying attention, we get penalized for 12 men on the field and they keep the drive going. Completely different ballgame.

So neither the long snapper nor Smith are the goats here. It's the fault of the RB.

It was 4th and 11 how does a 5 or 10 yard penalty change ne thing when u are that deep in the hole. Smart play is snap ball to ur punter then challenge. Cause what if GB muffs it.

Was it 4th and 11? Oops.
Yeah, bad call then.

"jbshell04" wrote:

It was still worth it. You basically get a free shot at making the 11 yards. If the RB doesnt make it then you get the penalty and punt.

If they snap it to the punter he has a tougher time getting the yardage than a RB.

Problem was they didnt get the penalty.

Ouch. Hope things'll get better soon.

Great post, btw. I do believe that it was Wolfe's fault, as their LS was waving and what not to get his attention. Like you said, he just noticed too late. A little blame can go to the LS, as he shouldn't have snapped it after trying to get his attention. Matthews was obviously off the field after that. Just bad execution of a pretty good idea.

my question was what the hell was woodson doing knocking the ball out/tackling tramon before he was in the endzone? lol i looked at the replay a lot of times thinking he slipped or something but it just looks like he dove at Tramon going for the football, i guess he just wanted to make a play haha

I was wondering that too during the replay, and the best explanation I could come up with was that he saw that Williams was going out/about to be tackled and was trying to receive a "handoff" before that happened to keep the play alive. If that is the case than it is explainable, if not the best decision in the world.

I would like to thank Lovie for challenging the fumble in the endzone and instead of being placed on the 4 yard line....we were rightfully placed on the 1...

I don't think Woodson was trying to hit the ball. I think he was trying to pull Williams into the End Zone.

TheKanataThrilla (19h) : And we could only wish to have this type of D
TheKanataThrilla (19h) : It's not like Philly has had low draft picks, but has managed to get themselves a top notch pass rush. We spend so much draft capital of D
packerfanoutwest (19h) : another crap halftime show
TheKanataThrilla (19h) : I think it is over, but then I think of Atlanta and want Philly to go in with the same intensity in the second half

Martha Careful (20h) : I cant help but feel good about how well the Packers D played in Philly during the playoffs
