Raji and B. Jackson not doing well, Blackmon a little further ahead.

One thing sure to bugger up our year is injuries.

It's times like this I'd like to have Kevin Carter on our DL rotation.

Yup, if they're not practicing on thursday it's a good bet we won't see them come game time.

Unfortunate, but could be worse.

we could still see them on sunday. I'm sure they'll take a couple days off, then test them again on saturday or sunday.

Time for Wynn, Jolly and Underwood(!) or Bush(!) to step it up against the Bears. This is when we'll find out how good our depth is.

Bears week: Wednesday practice report
By Greg A. Bedard of the Journal Sentinel
Sept. 9, 2009 12:40 p.m.

Green Bay -- Not much changed with a day off:

* DL B.J. Raji (left ankle), CB Will Blackmon (right quad) and RB Brandon Jackson (left ankle) all sat out the portion of practice open to the media.
* Of the three, Blackmon appeared to be the most active as he jumped and jogged around a bit.
* Beyond that, the media is prohibited from reporting on anything that has to do with scheme and/or game-planning.

Now, all three players could practice on Thursday, but if they aren't going after five days of rest after a Thursday game, it's not a great sign.

That leads to which players will be taking their places.

The Packers are really short at nose tackle, a crucial position in the 3-4 defense, behind Ryan Pickett. You would think Johnny Jolly would get a few more reps inside since he's the only other true tackle on the roster -- albeit a 4-3 tackle. And Jarius Wynn would get more playing time, likely at end. That would allow Jolly to move inside. The Packers could just play a lot of nickel.

As far as kick returns, Jordy Nelson would likely get first shot at both, with perhaps Charles Woodson mixing in on some. Tramon Williams would be an option. Possibly Brett Swain.

And with Jackson out, DeShawn Wynn would get a bulk of the work on third downs and behind Ryan Grant. It would also increase the chances all three fullbacks would be active. John Kuhn would be the emergency/short yardage back.

The depth does worry me a bit. I mean, what if Raji or Pickett go down for an extended period of time? If Jenkins, Jolly, Picket, or Raji, go down for awhile it's going to be a big problem. I guess I'm not totally sold on the depth if that happens. I know we have Torbio or whatever on the practice squad, but still. Wynn seems solid, but doesn't appear to be a block eater, and neither is Monty.

Would be nice to have one more big huge guy behind the starts. Damn you Harrell!! heh heh.

Notebook: Ankle injury may keep Raji out of opener

By Rob Demovsky rdemovsk@greenbaypressgazette.com September 9, 2009

Rookie defensive lineman B.J. Raji experienced a setback in his bid to return from a sprained right ankle in time to play in Sundays regular-season opener against the Chicago Bears.

The Green Bay Packers first-round draft pick tested his ankle, which he injured in the preseason finale at Tennessee last Thursday, during a workout on Tuesday, but according to coach Mike McCarthy, it did not go as well as we would have hoped.

Raji didnt practice on Wednesday but is expected to test his ankle again today.

After Tuesdays setback, it would seem unlikely Raji would be cleared to play against the Bears. That leaves the Packers in a hole at nose tackle because without Raji, they dont have a second true nose tackle on the roster behind starter Ryan Pickett. They could promote Anthony Toribio from the practice squad, but such a move would be unusual in Week 1.

Defensive end Johnny Jolly was forced to take some snaps at nose tackle in practice on Monday and again on Wednesday. Jolly had not taken any nose tackle reps during training camp or in the preseason games.

Its not a big adjustment, Jolly said. As long as I know my assignments and my technique, Ill be fine.

Rajis injury also means that rookie sixth-round pick Jarius Wynn might be active. The Packers have only six defensive linemen on their roster and will need at least five to be active on game day.

The last thing we need is to put Raji back into service while still nursing a bum tire. I'd rather sit him out against the Bears in hopes he can come back in Week 2 against Cincy if he can't go. It'd be nice to have him, but just go in with Jolly as Pickett's backup and hope Wynn and Montgomery can pick up the slack if pushed into service at DE.
