.... to 55 Sandman for not only bringing the rumor, but also for having the stones to absorb a lot of criticism for having done so.

Don't bring anymore, please. Your news has a tendency to suck.

:thumbleft:

Totally kidding....nice call....reminded me why I praised you earlier in this thread....I really, really thought this one was "bad scoop", and I never was one of those that have questioned your motivations, sources, etc.

I'm probably too conspiracy theorist on this, but I have to wonder, did Smith ever have a chance of making the team?

Smith new the defense very well. Collins was missing work due to family issues. They needed a smart safety that new the system that would help the rest of the secondary. Thus, they landed Smith. The perfect plug. Experienced in the system and could fill the void otherwise filled by Collins. Smith then does very well and surprises people, but Packers were already set on the safeties from what they've seen in practice and in games. Why? I don't know. I thought Smith did fairly well. Maybe Smith turned some heads originally and made the Packers think twice but his rogue type of defensive play sealed his fate?

I'm having difficulty believing he was signed for a roster spot on the 53 and was more signed as a teaching tool for the rest of the secondary. Of course, they could have changed their mind and kept him, but I'm thinking his free lance style/risk taking approach is what cost him his job.

you could be right - but what I want to know is what type of peep do we want? didnt we want a hard hitting guy with a attitude and then combine that with 2 int and a sack in preseason ...?

Everyone was praising smith when we signed him including the packers organization ... I got to wonder are they on crack?

I mean why dont we let go of collins then? he got some interceptions we seem to not like those oh ya nad a guy that can hit hard ...

I know he had a penalty or 2 against him. This is what happens when you get a guy thats a in yourface type.

Martin better be a god on ST and a interception manic at safety.

No more crack for the Ted Thompson man especially on cut day.

-note- I was going to say I wondered if smith had something to do with this also. He stated he wanted to start (pretty strongly) and perhaps Ted Thompson wasnt willing to make him a starter just yet and maybe there were words or ultimatiums set. Just conjecture ...

I don't recall anyone being excited about us picking up Smith, other than excited that we have someone on the roster (err had) that could help expedite the learning process for our secondary. Other than that, there was not much hype, that I can recall.

I think I'm sticking to my theory, that the Packers used his services to help the learning curve for the secondary and had limited desire to keep him for the season.

Zero, since Sandman was the one that broke this and he said reason was MM didnt like him, why doubt that by saying he was just used as a high price teaching aid

Are you serious? Nothing against sandman, but it was not a far stretch to assume Smith would be relieved. When we signed him, I wasn't expecting him to make the roster unless there was an injury.

Why doubt that? What were his sources? What were the names? Was that disclosed? Not to my knowledge.

I'm a bit too smart to fall for those things. You're probably one of those who believes Arrigo is in the know because he's a smart fella who can piece things together and posts his hunches before others do and when it comes true, he looks like a genius.

Regardless, I do not think Smith was signed to be on the roster as much as he was signed to help teach the defense. If he turned out to be worthy of starting, GREAT, if not, oh well. I wouldn't be surprised if Mike disliked him and that played into his being cut as well. Bottom line is, I don't think he was expected to make the team. I sure as heck didn't think he would.

Smith has been claimed on waivers by the Rams, from JSOnline :

UPDATE iV: S Anthony Smith has been claimed on waivers by the St. Louis Rams, a league source said.

Not surprising. He has the ability to contribute at this level, I'm still amazed the Packers cut him.

Maybe it could be both parts? Your thoughts and sandmans?

So you knew, yet didn't clarify? Where does that leave you sir? 😛

I think Arrigo is a smart person with lots of time on his hands. I've called him out a few times and it went ignored, but oh well. Overall, he's a decent guy.

Well, I never said he was ONLY signed to just teach. Let's get our facts straight here first. I said I believe he was signed for the primary purpose of teaching the defense. And if his skills and temperament merited a roster spot, GREAT. If not, oh well, good bye.

I'm not saying Mike did not like him. That might be very true. What I am saying is, predicting Smith would be cut, is nothing short of what I had expected. Therefore, since I expected it, someone else saying it, does not surprise me.

I can see where you're coming from, but I'm not sure if teaching is the right word; coaches teach.

When you look at the skill set of Smith and the scouting reports on him - that he was too slow and questionable in coverage, but a big hitter - well that kind of sounds like Bigby.

Moreover, Bigby gives you a little something on ST. Smith has a history of being less than adequate on ST (hence him getting in Tomlin's doghouse).

I think it is very telling that the player the Packers got from the Ravens has a similar skill set to Bigby and Smith, just that he can actually contribute on Special Teams.

Overall, I think Ted decided to take a look at Smith, with the belief that the coaches might be able to get something out of him on Special Teams. When it was apparent he wasn't the best special teams player, then Ted decided to look somewhere else.

For what it's worth - I personally think Jarret Bush has done pretty well at Safety, he has been assignment sure and hasn't committed penalties because his man beat him. On top of being a solid special teams player, Bush is uber athletic - something Smith is not.

In other words, Bush I think showed he is more valuable to this team than Smith, and having guys at the bottom of the 53-man roster must be able to do much more than be a #3 safety and dime back only.
