Not so fast, guys. According to this page , Anthony Smith is still on the roster as of 10:17 ET:

Packers placed S Charlie Peprah (knee) on injured reserve, ending his season.
Green Bay kept Anthony Smith, Derrick Martin, and Aaron Rouse behind top safeties Nick Collins and Atari Bigby. Peprah was on the outside looking in.

Sorry -- just joining this thread. Packers.com says Anthony Smith has been released. I'm guessing that link has already been posted.

Isn't the Packers.com link the prohibitive link, as it were? Shouldn't that be the source I trust?

Just a little confused here. I'm inclined to think he's gone if the Packers website says so.
William Henderson didn't have to run people over. His preferred method was levitation.

Smith was my fav pick up this off season as far as FA and undrafted rookies ...

I just read this article here:
http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/article/20090905/PKR01/90905052/1058/PKR01

and it speaks about how the pack traded for martin to play safety instead of smith for these reasons:

1. He can play CB and safety
2. also he can play ST well

So it sounds like versatility won out when it came to cutting smith. I hope Ted Thompson made the right move because I really liked smith's play.

But Martin could be the right choice when you consider he can play CB if need be and then also is good at ST.

I think MM probably hinted at this during his latest press conference. Him stating that we may not keep the most talented 53 may have been referencing Smith.

He must have really gotten on his bad side this spring even if he outplayed Bigby.

it's pretty clear that what McCarthy and Thompson prize most highly in their backups is versatility. Smith was OK. Had some opportunistic plays, but the staff decided to stick with their M.O. and make sure the team backups had versatility. And sorry, but Smith was not versatile. He'd get torched at any position other than safety. Even free safety would be a stretch. He's a hitter. pretty one-dimensional.

Don't it make you feel good that the GM won't field the best 53 men on the roster? Hows that good practice for a gm?
Just Imagine this for the next 6-9 years. What a ride it will be 🙂 (PS, Zero should charge for this)

Ummm.... how is Rouse make it then? Smith could play one position well.... Rouse couldn't play any well....

I think Smith ticked someone off behind the sense. No way Rouse was better than him on the field.

I think you could add Bigby to this description as well. I want another guy like Collins to team up with Collins. We have three studs in the secondary and a liability, but overall a very good secondary.

again - martin could be our guy; the pack obviously feel so ... maybe even dom had a say in things; he seems to be quite the master of the D.

I do agree that rouse blows and bigby has been lackluster.

I'm crossing my fingers and hoping martin is our man. If he is - then we have a really nice 53 man roster.

Bigby's not a backup. Rouse has shown flashes, and they want to see what he can do when healthy.

Why do I think we are going to see "communication breakdown" rear its ugly head from time to time in post-game press conferences this year?

When Smith was picked up, I said "wtf?"

Then Smith looks pretty good in preseason, while Bigby/Rouse alternate between looking pedestrian and being injured. Ted Thompson looks like a genius.

Now Smith is gone.

WTF????
