In August 2007, Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie said that he'd "never" allow someone who was involved in dogfighting to play for the Eagles.

"Never" came Thursday.

"We're very disciplined in what we stand for," Lurie told reporters just over two years ago (via MDS of FanHouse, via an e-mail from a reader reminding us of the item). "Let me give you an example -- a few years ago we had a couple players who were . . . to put this nicely, not very respectful of their dogs. . . . Well, we don't respect that. We don't do that. And they were gone from the team almost immediately if not immediately. That sets a tone, that these kinds of attitudes are unacceptable."

Found it interesting too that the Eagles didn't even give Vick a workout and still are paying him 1.6 million.

Yeah. They just decided to skip the media circus and sign him first, then kick the tires.

But, it's not like they didn't have any serious discussions first.

I'm happy for him. Players kill people and they don't get as scrutinized as Michael Vick. Example: Ray Lewis....

This might be best discussed in a different thread, but did he really kill someone? From what I remember reading and hearing was he was present when it happened.

I've just heard in the past that he stabbed someone. I'm not positive on that, though.

Okay I'll give another example. Dante Stallworth (24 days in prison, compared to 2 years).

I looked up Ray Lewis. He didn't kill anyone. They charged him heavy because they knew he knew what happened. By charging him it forced his hand to squeal on his buddies.

Mike Vick said he made a mistake. No, he didn't. A one-time accident is a mistake. Mike Vick has compiled a long history of screwed up life choices.

Even tho I hate what he did, our law said he has paid his price..

And the man in charge of the sport iIove,is giving him a chance..

So I am willing to do the same

I agree. But I can still protest with every fiber of my being his lame non-apology that he made a mistake.

Yes, he definitely made a huge mistake. I lost a TON of respect for him. I just think he has paid his dues and now he should be able to play in the NFL with out a bunch of people calling for his head.

anyone care to guesstimate how long it is before Donovan McNabb and his press corps start whining about lack of respect?

I hear him tapping on the mic at the moment..

Out of all the starting QB's in the game... he might be lacking the most internal fortitude of them all.

Good luck with Vick's life change.. may Philly be the right place to rebuild.

Good call Wade.. didn't take long.. and it will only get worse if McNabb struggles at all.. the "pitter patters" in his head will become deafening to the fragile psyche of McNabb.

I'm not sure what to make of this, but I'd rather see Vick than McNabb.

Vick is a massive upgrade over Kevin Kolb or A.J. Feeley. McNabb has only started 16 games in a season four times (in a ten year career), so having a good backup is essential in Philly. Jeff Garcia took the Eagles to the playoffs a few years back when McNabb went down, Vick has the ability to do the same, and he'll contribute even when McNabb's around in Wildcat formations and the like.
