Soccer. That's pretty much a given when you're from the Netherlands. I think that these two pretty much describe how our entire nation gets behind its team.

About half the country was there to celebrate after we won the 88 EC.

But, I'm drifting off here.

I like baseball and basketball and Formula 1, as well. Just look at my avatar.

Have to say that nothing comes close to football, though. Nothing gets me as excited as watching a football game.

I'm a huge basketball fan. I loved it when my Lakers won the championship this year. Hopefully now the Packers can follow their path 🙂

I had mentioned this awhile ago.. but there are new members, and that thread is buried, so I'll copy and paste it here. =)

March 17th, 2009, I took my wife out to an early dinner in downtown St. Paul and then surprised her with a Minnesota Wild game for her birthday. She's a HUGE Wild fan.. Hockey fan in general. And, I will say, I'm a big Wild fan, too. But, I wasn't as big of a Wild fan before that day as I am now.

You see, the Xcel Center is known for it's supreme viewing angles and sound system. It was even considered in the top 5 of ALL professional sporting venues (including NFL, MLB, NBA and NHL). But when we went, and experienced the awesomeness that is the X, nothing prepared us for the culture of environment that building holds. I don't think it has anything to do with the building itself, but the electric excitement the fans have for hockey.

The Wild are a struggling team, fighting hurt, to keep in the playoff race. As of right now they are 11th in the Western Conference playoff hunt, 2 points behind the 8th and lowest playoff berth. (Though, at the end of 2 periods, they are beating the Islanders 3-1) They have been without their 'superstar', Marion Gaborik for all but 8 or 9 games (He's back.. for now). Other noteworthy contributors have been in and out of play as well. They have been inconsistent as a team can be. Yet, the Xcel and the excitement for hockey in Minnesota was as if the state had JUST gotten it's first NHL team.

The Xcel Center is a place where a lot of casual 'fans' and people tend to migrate to during hockey games. I don't know why, but they do. And they contribute BIG TIME to the environment there.

Why am I posting this? Well, because, since March 17, 2009, I can say without shame that I'm more proud to be a Wild fan than any other professional franchise, including my beloved Vikings. I've always loved hockey as a kid. Since we were very poor when I was growing up, I never got to play the real sport, but I always played boot hockey (same sport, just with boots on the ice versus skates). When the North Stars left Minnesota for Dallas, I remember crying. And I also remember boycotting any and all hockey. Seriously, how do you take professional hockey out of Minnesota? The state that virtually shuts down school during the high school state tourny? (Well, not completely shuts down, but teachers stop lessons to wheel in the TV and turn on the hockey tournament.) But when Minnesota announced it was rewarded a new team, and that it was going to build a new arena for said team, a tiny spark of hope flickered. In 2003, when the Minnesota Wild not only made the playoffs for the first time in team history and in the 8th seed, but became the NHL's cinderella team and made history..

the Wild had beaten the favoured and third-seeded Colorado Avalanche in the first round in seven games, coming back from a 3-1 series deficit and winning both Game 6 and 7 in overtime. Brunette scored the series clinching goal. In the Western Conference semifinals, the Wild beat the fourth-seeded Vancouver Canucks, again in seven games, and again after being down 3-1 in a series. In the process, the Wild became the first team in playoff history to capture a seven-game series twice after facing elimination during Game 5.

Those playoff games, my dad, Shanna (my wife, then girlfriend) and I watched. Every one of them. And that little spark, started on fire pretty quick. Lasted the entire playoff run, and well into the next season. Then, with this trip to the Xcel with Shanna, my passion for hockey was ignited. Like none other.

The best sports anthem, by the way, is the Minnesota Wild Anthem.

No team, ever, has better fans than the Wild.

Oh, and I love the Twins, Cubs, and T-Wolves too. 😛

Soccer (As you in the US call it)

I'm a mad Everton Fan.

Our Goalkeeper is Tim Howard, The US national Team Goalkeeper.

I like most sports apart from Rugby Union I find the people who play and support it are nothing other than ignorant oiks!!! They just don't get football and take every opportunity they can to try and ridicule it.

Mucky Tundra (13-Aug) : With LVN that is; need to see what happens in the next practice
Mucky Tundra (13-Aug) : beast, reading about what happened, it sounded like one of those "two guys collide and are moving slow afterwards" type of deals
beast (12-Aug) : I believe Musgrave has been injured every single season since at least a Sophomore in highschool
packerfanoutwest (12-Aug) : Matt LaFleur: “Highly unlikely” Jordan Love plays more this preseason
dfosterf (12-Aug) : Doubs, Savion Williams, LVN, Musgrave all banged up to one degree or another, missing one here I forget
Zero2Cool (12-Aug) : RB Tyrion Davis-Price is signing with the Green Bay Packers.
Zero2Cool (12-Aug) : zero help, dominated. preseason
beast (12-Aug) : QB Jordan Love has surgery
beast (12-Aug) : Martha said Morgan had a lot of help, I didn't watch the OL so I can't say.
Zero2Cool (10-Aug) : Packers LT Jordan Morgan did not allow a single pressure across 23 pass-blocking snaps vs. Jets last night, per PFF
Mucky Tundra (10-Aug) : With buckeye and the reasonable couple, we're currently sitting at 10

dfosterf (10-Aug) : Just gotta figure out how.
dfosterf (10-Aug) : Could have been a worse start, so there is that.

Mucky Tundra (10-Aug) : Sooooooo many penalties
Mucky Tundra (10-Aug) : It may only be preseason, but this game is a trip to the dentist

Zero2Cool (9-Aug) : Woo-hoo
TheKanataThrilla (9-Aug) : NFL Network is broadcasting the game tonight, but not in Canada. Not sure why as no local television is showing the game.
beast (8-Aug) : But the Return from IR designations had to be applied by the 53 man cutdown.
beast (8-Aug) : It's a new rule, so it's not clear, but my understanding was that they could be IR'd at any time
Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : *had to be IRed at 53
Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : beast, I thought the designate return from IR players had to be IR at cutdowns to 53, not before
beast (8-Aug) : It's a brand new rule, either last season or this season, prior, all pre-season IRs were done for the season
beast (8-Aug) : But the Packers would have to use one for their return from IR spots on him, when they cut down to 53.
beast (8-Aug) : I think the NFL recently changed the IR rules, so maybe the season might not be over for OL Glover.
Zero2Cool (8-Aug) : Packers star Howton, first NFLPA prez, dies at 95 😔
dfosterf (8-Aug) : Apparently it is too complicated for several to follow your simple instructions, but I digress
dfosterf (8-Aug) : Zero- Did you see what I posted about Voice of Reason and his wife? She posted over at fleaflicker that they are both "In"
Zero2Cool (7-Aug) : Well, not crazy, it makes sense. Crazy I didn't notice/find it earlier
Zero2Cool (7-Aug) : it's crazy how one stored procedure to get data bogged everything down for speed here
dfosterf (7-Aug) : to herd cats or goldfish without a bowl. They reminded me of the annual assembly of our fantasy league
dfosterf (7-Aug) : out on a field trip, outfitting them with little yellow smocks. Most of the little folk were well behaved, but several were like trying

dfosterf (7-Aug) : Wife of reason posted on the in/out thread on fleaflicker that both she and vor are in
Zero2Cool (7-Aug) : This page was generated in 0.135 seconds.
