Zero, you raise a lot of good points, as usual, but I still think the situations are different.

I've heard many people say, "I only watch NASCAR highlights for the crashes." I've never heard someone say, "I only watch NFL highlights for the hits." Yes, the NFL highlights often treat us to great hits, but they also provide a smorgasbord of other options: long downfield passes, spectacular touchdown catches, broken tackles, leaping endzone dives, etc. While we all take pleasure in the big hits, many of us cringe a bit too, hoping our favorite players haven't been put out of the game. By contrast, NASCAR highlights are composed primarily of crashes (with maybe a few cool passes sprinkled in), almost all of which put the contestants out of the race, yet I watch people taking outright glee in the crashes, whereas most people shudder when a big hit in football causes potential for injury.

By the same token, while I'm sure there can be a lot of excitement in a NASCAR race ("Turn left . . . turn left . . . turn left . . . turn left . . ."), I've heard many people say they don't consider NASCAR a true sport. I've never heard anyone but the most ostentatious of Eurosnobs deride football in such a way. ;)

In all honesty, though, that was a pretty sick crash. It's a wonder that only 3 guys where involved.

i totally agree, tripp. until you've actually been to a nascar/indy/formula one race, it's hard to explain why people love racing. i've seen all different types of races - it's another sport my dad & i loved going to together. there is nothing like the feel of an indy car's motor revving - you can feel it in your bones! the control these guys/girls show when racing at hundreds of miles an hour within inches of each other is like nothing else. these are competitors who have to continually gauge risk vs reward for 500 miles. it really is awesome. second only to packers football, imho.

Off topic, I once heard a "Eurosnob" say (American) football was for other sports' rejects and that they aren't athletes. They all love to deride us for the kevlar body armor we wear too. Some of them just know absolutely nothing about the sport.

Don't get me wrong. In the past few years, I've developed a lot of respect for the sport of soccer. Whereas the major American sports tend to glorify the superman (with the exception of baseball and NASCAR), soccer is the sport of everyman. You don't need massive size or height or speed or strength to play soccer; you need a lot of stamina, which virtually anyone can build. It's a sport that doesn't require much money to operate, which definitely cannot be said of NASCAR. So soccer is arguably the most democratic of sports. That doesn't mean it will ever be my first choice for 90 minutes of sit-down entertainment. ;)

I also freely admit I don't understand NASCAR, primarily for the reason I just don't have much of a desire to understand it. I obviously don't fault people who are fans of the sport, because I'm sure watching a race at the track is an entirely different experience than watching it on TV.

Oh I'm a massive fan of soccer. Behind the Packers and the Badgers, Manchester United is my favorite sports team and I completely respect the stamina and immense skill soccer players display. I just find it hilarious when some ignorant Brit who only cares about and follows soccer starts spouting off about how American Footballers are pussies and unathletic.

As for NASCAR, I'm with you. I have no interest in it and don't really understand it but I can see why some people enjoy it. I also have a tremendous respect for what they do, they've got balls.
