Looks like they are getting prepared in case one or both of the punters fail to take a step forward.. imagine that actually working the punting guys out before inking them... lesson learned eh.

Source of Course...

Saturdays preseason game could be the final opportunity for Durant Brooks and Jeremy Kapinos to show they deserve to stay in the Green Bay Packers punting competition.

The Packers worked out four free-agent punters on Wednesday, according to sources, so if either Brooks or Kapinos flops against Cleveland, the team could move quickly to bring in a fresh leg.

The list at the tryout included Ken Parrish, a former NCAA Division II standout who was cut by the Philadelphia Eagles on Saturday, and Tom Malone, who has spent parts of two seasons on the New England Patriots practice squad. Neither has punted in an NFL game. The names of the other two punters werent known, but there were strong indications the Packers remain focused on younger options over veteran retreads.

Sources said the Packers showed no interest in 34-year-old Dirk Johnson, who has been cut by three teams since December and signed with Tampa Bay on Thursday. Nor have the Packers shown interest in several other notable veterans available Ryan Plackemeier, Mitch Berger, Josh Miller, Sam Paulescu and Chad Stanley.

Plackemeier and Miller were among at least 10 punters the Packers worked out last season before replacing cutdown-day pickup Derrick Frost with Kapinos on Dec. 3. They signed Brooks to the practice squad 10 days later, setting up a duel for the job this offseason.

Brooks gets the ball off more quickly and has superior numbers in training camp not including one extended pooch-punt period, hes averaged 48.9 gross yards and 4.05 seconds of hang time to Kapinos 46.6 and 3.95. But the divide has shrunken steadily as Kapinos has displayed his power and Brooks has battled the shanks.

Coach Mike McCarthy indicated earlier this week that Brooks had been having trouble with a tight hip flexor. However, Brooks disputed that between practices on Thursday.

I dont know where that came from, said Brooks, who battled hip-flexor issues at Georgia Tech and during his truncated rookie season with the Washington Redskins.

I havent told that to (McCarthy) or anybody, including the trainers. Its totally fine. Theres nothing wrong with it.

Depending how the preseason pans out, the Packers also might be willing to wait out one of the few other punting competitions around the NFL. Perhaps the most intriguing battle is in Denver, where undrafted rookie Britton Colquitt is trying to unseat incumbent Brett Kern.

Worth mentioning..

Source of Course..

Special teams coach Shawn Slocum put his punters through the most fast-paced drill of training camp to date during Thursdays night practice, and one of them shined.

Jeremy Kapinos excelled in a wide variety of punts. On seven reps from varying distances and none from the same spot on consecutive kicks Kapinos averaged |45.7 yards and 4.19 seconds of hang time. Durant Brooks wasnt bad (45.2 yards, 3.81 seconds) on one fewer punt, but Kapinos stood out.

He had the best punt of camp so far. It came with the ball at the 20. He drilled a high, towering kick that hung in the air for 5.0 seconds and ended up with a gross of 60 yards. On his very next kick from his own 40, he booted a 51-yarder that hung for 4.34 seconds. Then, from the defenses 45, he forced a fair catch at the 15-yard line. He even did well while backed up in his own end zone. With the ball at the 3, he hit a 54-yarder with |4.34 seconds of hang time.

He did his best work from his own 20, where in addition to the 60-yard bomb he also had a |55-yarder with 4.94 seconds of hang time.

It was a significant step for Kapinos, whose camp-long numbers arent quite as good as Brooks but has been more consistent.

The curse of Craig Hentrich. I wonder if Uncle Ted would have been running the show back in the day, if Tennesse would have been able to sign him away from us.

Well, on the good side, it can't get much worse than last year.

I hope that Kapinos has found his rythm or something. I just want the best guy to win, but I haven't heared about him shanking as much as Brooks. I'd rather have 2 yards avg less and a lot more consistency, than a punter like Frost, who booms it 55 yards one time and kicks it out of bounds after 15 yards the next.

If we pay a punter $1M plus to punt the ball three of four times a game, he should be able to hit a quarter strategically placed on the 4.5 yard line with a back bounce three out of four times.

I kind of like the coffin corner thing better, but there was only one Ray Guy.

I lean toward Kapinos because he was decent in live action last season, and at this point, I'll settle for decent.

Hentrich got away because the Packers were up against the salary cap with a Super Bowl team that was full of veterans. The Titans signed for what I think was the highest salary for a punter up till that point. Desmond Howard got away too, for the same reason. The salary cap giveth and the salary cap taketh away.

Spot on with Hentrich. Ron Wolf has said it was a mistake not paying out the money to keep him.

Desmond Howard left for playing time at WR. He was told by the Raiders he'd be on the field as WR and shelled out lots of money for him to play three roles. KR, PR and WR.

Yeah, and he barely played at WR for Oakland anyway, because he just didn't have the strength to get off the line of scrimmage in the NFL. I wonder if he regrets his decision. The Packers might've won another Super Bowl with him.

I've never blamed Wolf for letting Hentrich get away. In hindsight it was obviously a mistake, but signing him to such a big contract would've meant letting another key player go. Tough decision.

The greatest irony is that Frost was signed because he didn't have as strong a leg as Ryan but was far more consistent - or so we had hoped.

Kapinos kicking a 60 yarder and a 55 yarder - NICE
thats what we need. And some decent hang time. Last year I thought he did pretty decent ... least compared to frost there.

beast (24-Dec) : Sounds like no serious injuries from the Saints game and Jacobs and Watson should play in the Vikings game
packerfanoutwest (24-Dec) : both games Watson missed, Packers won
Martha Careful (24-Dec) : I hope all of you have a Merry Christmas!
Mucky Tundra (24-Dec) : Oh I know about Jacobs, I just couldn't pass up an opportunity to mimic Zero lol
buckeyepackfan (24-Dec) : Jacobs was just sat down, Watson re-injured that knee that kept him out 1 game earlier
buckeyepackfan (24-Dec) : I needed .14 that's. .14 points for the whole 4th quarter to win and go to the SB. Lol
Mucky Tundra (24-Dec) : Jacobs gonna be OK???
Zero2Cool (24-Dec) : Watson gonna be OK???
packerfanoutwest (24-Dec) : Inactives tonight for the Pack: Alexander- knee Bullard - ankle Williams - quad Walker -ankle Monk Heath
packerfanoutwest (24-Dec) : No Jaire, but hopefully the front 7 destroys the line of scrimmage & forces Rattler into a few passes to McKinney.
packerfanoutwest (24-Dec) : minny could be #1 seed and the Lions #5 seed
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : We'd have same Division and Conference records. Strength of schedule we edge them
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I just checked. What tie breaker?
bboystyle (23-Dec) : yes its possible but unlikely. If we do get the 5th, we face the NFCS winner
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : Ahh, ok.
bboystyle (23-Dec) : yes due to tie breaker
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I mean, unlikely, yes, but mathematically, 5th is possible by what I'm reading.
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : If Vikings lose out, Packers win out, Packers get 5th, right?
bboystyle (23-Dec) : Minny isnt going to lose out so 5th seed is out of the equation. We are playing for the 6th or 7th seed which makes no difference
Mucky Tundra (23-Dec) : beast, the ad revenue goes to the broadcast company but they gotta pay to air the game on their channel/network
beast (23-Dec) : If we win tonight the game is still relative in terms of 5th, 6th or 7th seed... win and it's 5th or 6th, lose and it's 6th or 7th
beast (23-Dec) : Mucky, I thought the ad revenue went to the broadcasting companies or the NFL, at least not directly
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I think the revenue share is moot, isn't it? That's the CBA an Salary Cap handling that.
bboystyle (23-Dec) : i mean game becomes irrelevant if we win tonight. Just a game where we are trying to play spoilers to Vikings chance at the #1 seed
Mucky Tundra (23-Dec) : beast, I would guess ad revenue from more eyes watching tv
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I would think it would hurt the home team because people would have to cancel last minute maybe? i dunno
beast (23-Dec) : I agree that it's BS for fans planning on going to the game. But how does it bring in more money? I'm guessing indirectly?
packerfanoutwest (23-Dec) : bs on flexing the game....they do it for the $$league$$, not the hometown fans
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I see what you did there Mucky
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : dammit. 3:25pm
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : Packers Vikings flexed to 3:35pm
Mucky Tundra (23-Dec) : Upon receiving the news about Luke Musgrave, I immediately fell to the ground
Mucky Tundra (23-Dec) : Yeah baby!
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : LUKE MUSGRAVE PLAYING TONIGHT~!~~~~WOWHOAAOHAOAA yah
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I wanna kill new QB's ... blitz the crap out of them.
beast (23-Dec) : Barry seemed to get too conservative against new QBs, Hafley doesn't have that issue
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : However, we seem to struggle vs new QB's
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : Should be moot point, cuz Packers should win tonight.
packerfanoutwest (23-Dec) : ok I stand corrected
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : Ok, yes, you are right. I see that now how they get 7th
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : 5th - Packers win out, Vikings lose out. Maybe?
beast (23-Dec) : Saying no to the 6th lock.
beast (23-Dec) : No, with the Commanders beating the Eagles, Packers could have a good chance of 6th or 7th unless the win out
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I think if Packers win, they are locked 6th with chance for 5th.
beast (23-Dec) : But it doesn't matter, as the Packers win surely win one of their remaining games
