I seriously doubt that they would make that trade. And I think the reason the question was asked is because he is on the PUP list. I'm not sure if that is the same as the PUP list for the regular season, or if it's just for training camp / preseason. Could someone clarify?

From another forum: Edit--not a forum, an article PUP--Link

There's been a lot of PUP list references in the news today so I thought I'd dust off some clarification of one of the most misunderstood eligibility rules in the NFL.

First and foremost, there are two PUP lists.

The Active PUP is for players that have some form of injury that will prevent them from starting training camp.

If placed on Active PUP, a player can rehab and participate in team meetings but cannot practice.

A player has to be placed on Active PUP before he begins training camp, so that's why you're seeing the stories popping up now.

A player on Active PUP can be removed from the list at any time during camp.

A player on Active PUP counts against the league mandated roster limit (currently 80).

And one of the most important rules, a player must be on Active PUP in order to be considered for Reserve PUP.

At the end of preseason, if an Active PUP player is still several weeks away from being able to play, the team may place him on Reserve PUP.

Reserve PUP players are not eligible to play for the first six weeks of the season.

Reserve PUP players do not count against the 53 man roster.

Reserve PUP players have a three week window after Week 6 to practice with the team but a roster decision must be made, either to activate to the 53 or to IR the player, within that timeframe.

Okay, thank you for clearing that up for me, dfosterf. That's what I was thinking but I wasn't positive.

Thought I would just post this in Barnett Thread.
http://myespn.go.com/blogs/nfcnorth/0-13-70/Black-and-Blue-all-over--Barnett-antsy.html

The sequence of events was interesting, at least. On Monday afternoon, Green Bay coach Mike McCarthy had this to say to reporters:

"You could make an argument that Brandon Chillar is our most productive linebacker to this point in training camp. He seems very natural in the pressure packages, both base and sub. He's someone that can play a number of different positions and can give us flexibility in our coverage schemes. Another instinctive football player, has excellent range. We also expect him to be an impactful player on special teams, but Brandon is having an exceptional training camp."

That assessment jibes with the performance I witnessed last week. A few hours later, Nick Barnett -- the injured player Chillar has replaced -- offered this on his Twitter account: "Getting a little bit upset about this pup crap."

I personally love this, nothing like some good competition to light a fire under your star LB. The only thing I hope is that Barnett doesn't try to push his way back in too soon. I do think he is the kind of player though that if he brings the intensity in a game it will catch on for everybody else.

When was the last time the Packers placed a linebacker as a starter in the Pro Bowl? I ask this because you used the word star in the same sentence as Barnett.

He is our star LB. None of them played well last year but just 2 years ago Barnett played as good of football as the 2 guys who won the popularity contest. I am not claiming him as a top 5 LB in the NFL or anything, you don't have to be better than Patrick Willis to be good.

When Barnett makes those plays for loss on third and two that he has wiffed on in the past, I'll agree with you. Until then he has been a good stat guy on a defense designed to funnel the play to him. Have I ever mentioned how much I hate his Samurai celebration.

BTW, the difference between Barnett and those popularity contest winners is that they don't wiff on that third and two play.

Injured linebacker Nick Barnett is doing whatever it takes to keep himself busy and engaged with the defense's transition to the new 3-4 scheme. Often during team (11-on-11) periods, he can be seen in the middle of the field, 40 to 50 yards behind the defense, reading the play script and going through the motions of some of the reads and reactions.

Off the field, he's taking the elementary school approach - using flash cards.

"Me and my wife do a little quizzing and stuff," Barnett said. "I'm getting it, but it's definitely a lot. I don't think anyone in here has this defense 100 percent down, because there's so much, the quantity of it. It's high quantity, but also it's very high quality, so we've just got to learn it."

Barnett has had enough of the learning on paper, though. He's definitely anxious to return to the field for the first time since tearing the ACL in his knee last November at Minnesota. He said he woke up Tuesday morning "in a bad funk" because he was coming to the stadium unable to practice once again.

If it were up to him, he'd be back by now, but the medical staff hasn't cleared him, which isn't all that unexpected less than nine months removed from reconstructive surgery. He hasn't been told when he's going to be able to test his knee again, which would be the first step toward getting medical clearance to play.

"I trust they're going to make the best judgment when the time is right, but it's hard," he said. "I want to be out there but I'm not going to rush it if doc says it's not the right thing."

In the meantime, fellow inside linebackers Brandon Chillar and Desmond Bishop have enjoyed productive starts to training camp. Chillar has taken Barnett's snaps with the No. 1 defense at the "Mack" linebacker spot in the 3-4, while Bishop is a potential sub at both the "Mack" and "Buck" spots.

Barnett was asked if he gets nervous when he hears the coaching staff praising the players who are out there in his place, but the seven-year veteran insisted that's the least of his concerns.

"Am I worried about losing my position? No, no, no," he said. "I'm not worried about anything. I'm worried about what Nick Barnett is going to do when I get on the field, how I'm going to help this team. I know what I can do. I've been here, I've been playing, I know I'm going to put everything out on that field and that's what they want.

"I'm happy they're doing a good job, because that lets me know if I ever go down or anybody ever goes down, we have depth and we won't have a season like last year."

I love his dedication, even when he can't be participating ON the field.

I agree.

I like Barnett, wish him well, hope he has a pro bowl year. BUT...

He had a terrible 2008 before his injury and NOBODY knows how he will do in this 3-4 scheme. Could Chillar or Poppinga be taking Barnett's job? Something to think about.

Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : beast, I thought the designate return from IR players had to be IR at cutdowns to 53, not before
beast (8-Aug) : It's a brand new rule, either last season or this season, prior, all pre-season IRs were done for the season
beast (8-Aug) : But the Packers would have to use one for their return from IR spots on him, when they cut down to 53.
beast (8-Aug) : I think the NFL recently changed the IR rules, so maybe the season might not be over for OL Glover.

Mucky Tundra (4-Aug) : Oh I know; I was just exploring and it blew my mind that you could trade picks because of the whole reordering thing
