I hadn't been to the Packer blog at JSOnline for quite some time. Read some older posts and stumbled across this -

Ryan Grant should benefit from having Korey Hall around. With Hall in the lineup, Grant averaged 4.2 yards per carry and had a DVOA of -3.2%; without him, Grant averaged 2.9 yards per carry with a DVOA of -26.9%. If I was Korey Hall and I read that statistic, dinner would be on Ryan Grant every night for the next six months.

This is from "Football's Outsiders Almanac". I know there are quite a few people calling for Quinn Johnson to start, but maybe the answer to fullback was on the existing roster. Don't forget, Johnson, like Hall, was a converted linebacker.

On the other hand, what does this say about John Kuhn?

For those wondering what DVOA is, this is how they describe their stat

Our primary statistic at Football Outsiders is DVOA -- Defense-adjusted Value Over Average. It's a simple idea: We take every play from the NFL season and compare it to the league average on the same play, after adjusting for down, distance, game situation, and the quality of the opponent.

So if I'm interpreting this right, Grant runs plays 3.2% less effective than the average play in the NFL, which really isn't that much. But, the -26.9%, well let's just say that's not so good.

Hall is number 1 FB in practice today as reported on GBPG. During a chat I asked how likely it is that Quinn takes a spot from either Kuhn or Hall and they said very likely. Based on the stats in another thread, and how well Quinn performs in camp, it looks like that leaves Kuhn as the odd man out.

If you watched Quinn block at LSU you know he's going to finish the season, if not start it as the number one fullback. The guy is just a beat and enjoys punishing people when he blocks.

from the press gazette:

Rookie FB Quinn Johnson had an extremely embarrassing moment during individual work, failing in his first four attempts to successfully run under a metal bar at the start of the rope-ladder drill. When he finally succeeded, he was so tired he barely had enough energy to run through the ropes. Then, on his next attempt, he ran into the bar again and actually knocked the apparatus over. All of this happened within feet of General Manager Ted Thompson. In Johnson's defense, it was only the first day of camp and he has a lot of time to improve -- but this is basic stuff that just shouldn't happen. All he needed to do was bend his knees.

---

Hopefully he will learn this basic technique by the time the season starts 😛

Gee, maybe there's a spot for him on the "pad level"-challenged OL?
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
