Packers' Murphy: Team set for next decade with QB Aaron Rodgers

Team will retire Favre's number, Murphy just not sure when

By Richard Ryman and Pete Dougherty, July 30, 2009

The Green Bay Packers were severely tested with the Brett Favre situation last year, but we felt we had to act in best long-term interest of the Packers and I think we did that, President and CEO Mark Murphy told shareholders this morning.

That comment drew applause from those attending the meeting, held inside Lambeau Field.

Murphy added: One thing we found out is we have a pretty good quarterback in Aaron Rodgers . The reality of the NFL is unless you have a good play at the quarterback position youre going to struggle. I think were set for the next decade with Aaron Rodgers.

Murphy also said the challenging economic situation was one of the reasons ticket prices werent raised. When fans applauded that, Murphy jokingly said hopefully youll applaud next year when we raise ticket prices.

At a media press conference after the meeting, Murphy said theres no question the team will retire Favres number.

He deserves it, Murphy said. I cant answer when that time will be. It will be an appropriate time for both parties.

Murphy also said the team is close to having an agreement with the Wisconsin State Lottery to put patches on practice jerseys. The NFL this year authorized teams to put advertising patches on their practice uniforms and market in partnership with state lotteries. "I think well be able to announce something soon.

In his state-of-the-team speech, General Manager Ted Thompson talked about the quarterback situation, the 3-4 defense and draft picks:

On the quarterback situation. We feel Aaron (Rodgers) played very well last year and I think youre going to be pleasantly surprised with (backups) Matt Flynn and Brian Brohm. Theyve been able to go through a full offseason of the quarterbacks school. Were looking forward to watching their advancement in training camp.

On the new 3-4 defense: I think youll find it exciting. Theres a lack of predictability in what were going to do.

On first-round draft picks B.J. Raji and Clay Matthews: Raji is a special kind of player because of his size and quickness. Matthews is ideally suited for what we are trying to do (3-4 defense).

Thompson also said team officials were working diligently on getting deals for Raji and Matthews finished for the start of training camp Saturday. Im sure that will work out fine.

Thompson also gave owners a brief history on the NFLs collective bargaining agreement with players.

The drizzle, which was fairly heavy when the meeting started at 10 a.m., stopped about 15 minutes into the event. The meeting ended about 11:30 a.m. and tours of Ray Nitscke Field and the Don Hutson Center were to take place.

New vice president of finance
The Packers also announced this morning they've named Paul Baniel vice president of finance.

Baniel, 47, is a certified public accountant. For past six years, he was chief financial officer for the Potawatomi Bingo Casino. Before that he was vice president of finance for the Milwaukee Brewers. He will begin his new role Aug. 10.

Good to see that it drew an applause. I thought that these guys might not've been that happy with it, as Favre is/was a ticket and merchandise selling machine. Apparently they see as well that having Rodgers in there is a long term solution, as where relying on Favre would've gotten them another two years max from a financial standpoint.

and I think youre going to be pleasantly surprised with (backups) Matt Flynn and Brian Brohm.

I hope that he's right about it. From what I've heared and seen, Mr. Brohm is following up his brother nicely so far. Flynn, I don't know, he looks solid, but needs some experience.

If the NFL goes the way of soccer and NASCAR, with ads plastered all over the jerseys, they damn well better reduce the number of commercial breaks. It's simply gotten out of hand. I'd far rather have electronic ad displays around the edge of the field than commercial breaks every three minutes.

I cannot believe first practice in a little over a day. Where has the year gone? Regardless, I like the guys this organization has in charge. I am super excited to see the season progress from here. I am particularly excited about seeing my favorite team use a 3-4 defense, and I think we have one of the best teachers here to make it a success with the players we have.

WOO!

Mucky Tundra (30-Jan) : Now that's a thought, maybe they're looking at the college ranks? Maybe not head coaches but DC/assistant DCs with league experience?
beast (30-Jan) : College Coaches wouldn't want that publicly, as it would hurt recruiting and they might not get the job.
beast (30-Jan) : I thought they were supposed to publicly announce them, at least the NFL ones. Hafley was from college, so I believe different rules.
Mucky Tundra (30-Jan) : Who knows who they're interviewing? I mean, nobody knew about Hafley and then out of nowhere he was hired
beast (30-Jan) : I wonder what's taking so long with hiring a DL coach, 2 of the 3 known to interview have already been hired elsewhere.
Zero2Cool (27-Jan) : Packers coach Matt LaFleur hires Luke Getsy as senior assistant, extends Rich Bisaccia's deal

buckeyepackfan (26-Jan) : I forgot, they corrected the call a week later. Lol btw HAPPY BIRTHDAY dhazer!
buckeyepackfan (26-Jan) : That brings up the question, why wasn't Nixon down by contact? I think that was the point Kanata was making.

Mucky Tundra (24-Jan) : Rude!
beast (24-Jan) : Martha? 😋
Zero2Cool (24-Jan) : Raiders hired someone from the elderly home.
dfosterf (24-Jan) : I'm going with a combination of the two.
beast (24-Jan) : Either the Cowboys have no idea what they're doing, or they're targeting their former OC, currently the Eagles OC
Zero2Cool (23-Jan) : Fake news. Cowboys say no
Zero2Cool (23-Jan) : Mystery candidate in the Cowboys head coaching search believed to be Packers ST Coordinator Rich Bisaccia.
beast (23-Jan) : Also why do both NYC teams have absolutely horrible OL for over a decade?
beast (23-Jan) : I wonder why the Jets always hire defensive coaches to be head coach
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Still HC positions available out there. I wonder if Hafley pops up for one
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Trent Baalke is out as the Jaguars GM.
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Jeff Hafley would have been a better choice, fortunately they don't know that. Someone will figure that out next off season
