So a buddy of mine and I were talking last weekend at my son's baseball tourney.. whom are some of our favorite NFL coaches of all time are.. and we bantered a names around.

So I ask the Packershome.com members to list some of their favorites in this thread...

I will start out with one of my favorites, even though he coached the enemy, one could easily respect the way he handled his teams..

Bud Grant..

Source of Course

The Outstanding Achievement Award cites the coach's contributions to the state and his community.

Bud Grant, a great three-sport athlete at the University of Minnesota and longtime successful football coach of the Vikings and the CFL's Winnipeg Blue Bombers, has been named the winner of an Outstanding Achievement Award from his alma mater.

The university's Board of Regents -- upon the recommendation of the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, the College of Education and Human Development and the All-University Honors Committee -- did the voting.

The Outstanding Achievement Award recognizes alumni who have attained unusual distinction in their chosen fields or profession, or in public service, and who have demonstrated outstanding leadership on a community, state, national or international level. It is one of the top awards given to university alumni.

In notifying Grant of the honor, University of Minnesota president Robert Bruininks wrote that "not only were you a tremendous athlete at the University of Minnesota, but you went on to become a legendary coach and an outstanding advocate for family, conservation and the environment. Your contributions to the university, your community and the state of Minnesota and beyond are significant."

Grant played and coached the Blue Bombers for 10 years and the Vikings for 18 years.

"Well, it's an honor to have something like this awarded," Grant said. "When you look at all the number of people who've won this award [1,127], that's certainly an elite group to be a part of and I'm very proud of it."

Among other Gophers athletes who have won this award are former football coach Bernie Bierman (for whom Bud played), Dave Winfield, Flip Saunders, Paul Molitor, Tony Dungy and Lou Nanne, all legendary names in university sports.

Recipients of the award receive a crystal obelisk and have their name engraved on the Alumni Wall of Honor located next to the McNamara Alumni Center.

O.K. Z-

You did the past, I will do the (?future?).

If, for whatever reason, Mike McCarthy gets canned...

By far and away my personal choice for the next HC of the Packers would be...

Bill Cowher.

First thing he's do is tear up those new heating coils under the practice field, second thing he'd do is tear down the Don Hutson center.

Make these guys look forward to the games compared to practice again.

Vince would appreciate that.

Always liked Holmgren. Mike Tomlin is one of my new favorites. Vince Lombardi is of course on that list. I admire coaches that our tough and resilient yet can still pick up on players emotions enough to provide a comfortable atmosphere for the whole team.

Another favorite not in the Green and Gold... Bum Phillips.

A couple of quotes to answer the question why...

(referring to Houston Oiler's quarterback Warren Moon) "That boy could throw a football through a car wash and not get it wet."

(referring to Bear Bryant) "He can take his'n and beat your'n and take your'n and beat his'n."

(To an official) "Hey, can I, can I tell you one thing? That's three holding penalties on one football team in a quarter and a half. (Pauses) That ain't funny."

"Rogers sees daylight. Campbell makes daylight."

"How do you win? By getting average players to play good and good players to play great. That's how you win. "

The only discipline that lasts is self-discipline.

"Two kinds of ballplayers aren't worth a darn: One that never does what he's told, and one who does nothin' except what he's told. "

"You don't know a ladder has splinters until you slide down it. "

The man was a character but he could coach up a team to play the game..

Both Cowher and Phillips are on that list. I really like Gruden myself. The amount of work he puts in (arriving on crazy hours, QB-ing the team himself in practice and what not), the way he can just get a franchise back to its winning ways in a short amount of time. There's a reason why the Bucs gave up so many draft picks to get him there, he's just a great coach.

Favorite All Time: Lombardi OBVIOUSLY!

If McCarthy did get canned...

As much as I hate the Steelers-- If I wanted a ensuring HC, I'd sign Tomlin.. he's young, has SB experience, ETC. If we're restricted to unemployed coaches, I'd do everything I could to try and speak Tony Dungy out of retirement. Otherwise, I'd go after Gruden.. Cowher would be great though. When the packers shut the door on Brett's comeback in Summer 2008, part of me sided with McCarthy.. I've tried to stay positive.. but I don't think I'm that big on him anymore-- idk why. I also think he needs to be more aggressive towards the end of games. Was it the Carolina game where we just gave it to Grant with under two minutes hoping for a field goal and not a safe 7 pt lead? I think it was, then Steve Smith burned our secondary and we lost... 😞 damn :(

But that's my take - HATE IT OR LOVE IT 😃

93Z nailed my first choice. I loved watching the man with the cowboy hat and boots. Also with a name like Bum how can't you like him. My other fav was Buddy Ryan lol. I love the Coaches that are full of piss and vinegar and don't care what others think of them.

I would also have Glanville on my list for his character not his ability to evaluate talent 😛 Just ask Mississippi how good Glanvilles skill is at reading talent.
Just Imagine this for the next 6-9 years. What a ride it will be 🙂 (PS, Zero should charge for this)

Obviously for me.........Bud Grant!

But i also have to go with....

Vince Lombardi....The coaches coach. I don't care if you're a Vikings, Bears or whatever fan, ya gotta admire and respect Vince.
In 99% of the free world you mention one name, either "Vince" or "Lombardi"
and it its a given as who is being referred to.

Also have to go with Tom Landry, great coach and class act.

I was waiting for someone else to chime this name in.. VR didn't let me down.

This man simply has to be in the very top of the discussion for me.. how he was handled at the end is one of the very reasons I loathe Jerry Jones.

Tom Landry was all class... however he didn't have the cleanest group of players roaming the NFL.. but on Sunday's that team towed his line.. the speaks volumes.

Chuck Knoll was right there with him. As a youngster, I absolutely enjoyed this match up of coaching legends.
