6th round pick of the Oakland Raiders.

By all accounts, a high-character guy.

Reportedly released by the Raiders, no reason given.

Projected as a possible OLB in the 3-4.

1. Why release him before training camp?

2. Why wouldn't we want to take an essentialy free look at him, if he were to be available?

3. Is Al as crazy as I think? I know the situation changed there regarding this position, but this type of move at this point in the off-season is extremely rare, is it not?

Some more insight on the rarity of this cut.

Maybe he was absolutely the worst DE on the team? I could imagine that they'd have 3 undrafted DEs who are all better than him, so they let him go. Still, wouldn't make that much sense, but hey, it's the Raiders after all.

I agree with you that we should take a look at him. Here was his scouting report. The kid looks pretty solid, especially for a 6th round pick, just by going through his stats and this report (Haven't seen him actually play).

Analysis

Positives: Good initial quickness off the snap. ... Has some flexibility to get under the tackle and around the edge to close on the passer. ... Good short-area burst to close effectively and can explode into the quarterback to create fumbles. ... Good use of hands to rip the ball away from the ballcarrier. ... At least adequate feel for the running game. ... Good lateral quickness to scrape and stretch the play wide. ... Can break down in space to make tackles in the open field.

Negatives: Classic "tweener" lacking the fluid hips to change direction and the straight-line speed for coverage. ... Lacks the bulk and strength to hold up in the running game. ... Too often loses sight of the ball by rushing vertically upfield, leaving gaping holes for the offense to exploit. ... Has a naturally lanky build and may struggle to add considerable mass.

Biggest problem is, like the article states, he's going through the waiver wire and KC is in front of us on that. They didn't even have a decent 4-3 DE, let alone a 3-4 OLB. They should really pick this kid up.

Maybe there's something going on behind the scenes that we don't know.

Rock:

I just do not see how they could possibly know that.

Rock and Cheesey.

As Rock said, they are the Raiders, which is sadly almost self-explanatory if we want to be derisive about it.

I think we need an R.P. ruling here.

I'm leaning towards Al had a senior moment in his sleep and yelled out, "Strike Sulak!" and one of his lackeys thought that meant cut him or something.

All in and out of the realm of possibility is in fact possible with Al.

You HAVE to love those guys at bangcartoon. I know everyone has seen this one, and at the time I thought they "missed the mark" by not putting more Brett in it...

Months later, it is BETTER than when they first did it, really!

short highlight video of him from he's days at Mizzou, I'd say he might be worth a look if he falls to us in waivers

Definitely couldn't hurt to bring him in and see how he does. I love the name, anyway.

Well, he is bringing us some promising news, at least.

@tompelissero : Sulak is a load at 6-5, 251. He's still figuring out what he's supposed to be doing but he just bent Devin Frischknecht in half.
