This is the same kind of non-story that was along the same lines of Al Harris getting cut because he was due a $1.25 millon roster bonus earlier this spring.
Poppinga will still be a valuable veteran backup and special teams player this year, and I'd much rather have him backing up Kampman at LOLB than a rookie or someone who is less qualified just because they'll be making a million less.
Matthews and Thompson are pretty much entrenched at ROLB, and you'd have to think Chillar and Bishop are pretty good bets to backup and rotate in with Barnett and Hawk in the middle. So unless guys like Lansanah and/or Havner make huge strides in training camp that would make Poppinga expendable, you have to think his chances of sticking around for at least another season are pretty good. We may end up carrying 9 or 10 LBs too.
Rookies like Jones and Obiozor are probably practice squad players unless they show enough in camp to stow them away on the 53-man.
