Poppinga probably stays on the team because of his value on special teams. The Packers special teams was awful last year and they'll need a player like Poppinga to kind of anchor it. I don't think his roster spot is in jeopardy. The other young backers such as Brad Jones will have to show a lot for that to happen and I can't see that happening at the moment.

Who wants to pay a special teams player millions of dollars in a down economy? I sincerely doubt he'll make the team unless he proves his value as a linebacker, not just a special teamer.

GB is still 20 mil over the cap. It's not about paying so and so this. When you have this type of money you keep the best players in my view regardless of what they're making. GB doesn't need to make cut backs and if Poppinga upgrades you in some area, hang onto him. You can always cut him next year.

Yea I could only see them keeping him another year. We have so many other young players to be signing and Poppinga is almost 30 already.

This is the same kind of non-story that was along the same lines of Al Harris getting cut because he was due a $1.25 millon roster bonus earlier this spring.

Poppinga will still be a valuable veteran backup and special teams player this year, and I'd much rather have him backing up Kampman at LOLB than a rookie or someone who is less qualified just because they'll be making a million less.

Matthews and Thompson are pretty much entrenched at ROLB, and you'd have to think Chillar and Bishop are pretty good bets to backup and rotate in with Barnett and Hawk in the middle. So unless guys like Lansanah and/or Havner make huge strides in training camp that would make Poppinga expendable, you have to think his chances of sticking around for at least another season are pretty good. We may end up carrying 9 or 10 LBs too.

Rookies like Jones and Obiozor are probably practice squad players unless they show enough in camp to stow them away on the 53-man.

Your saying what I've been saying. When you have that much cap space it's stupid to your better players just because they're making a little more than you want. I mean I think you keep a couple spots for young and up and comers but the i think Poppinga is good enough to be able make it before that. People have been trying to get rid of Poppinga since he's started... I just don't get it. Why cut a good football player because he's making money... that's his job... as long as he can still had value to the team which Popppinga does.

beast (8-Aug) : But the Return from IR designations had to be applied by the 53 man cutdown.
beast (8-Aug) : It's a new rule, so it's not clear, but my understanding was that they could be IR'd at any time
Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : *had to be IRed at 53
Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : beast, I thought the designate return from IR players had to be IR at cutdowns to 53, not before
beast (8-Aug) : It's a brand new rule, either last season or this season, prior, all pre-season IRs were done for the season
beast (8-Aug) : But the Packers would have to use one for their return from IR spots on him, when they cut down to 53.
beast (8-Aug) : I think the NFL recently changed the IR rules, so maybe the season might not be over for OL Glover.
Zero2Cool (8-Aug) : Packers star Howton, first NFLPA prez, dies at 95 😔
dfosterf (8-Aug) : Apparently it is too complicated for several to follow your simple instructions, but I digress
