heres an interesting thought on the Packers signing Jennings

5. Green Bay Packers pay Greg Jennings

Favre's frustration with Packers management arises in part from Thompson's unwillingness to spend big money on free agents.

Soon, we'll all find out whether Thompson will pay big money to the players he drafted who have become stars.

At the top of the list is receiver Greg Jennings. Once Favre formally arrives in Minnesota, Thompson might feel compelled to soothe the natives, who might be upset that the 2008 trade of Favre to the Jets couldn't keep No. 4 from winding up in Minnesota eventually. The best way to change the subject might be to get Jennings locked up for the long term.

They've got the cap space to do it, and they'll have every reason to ensure that one of their best young players is fully motivated to fend off Favre and the Vikings.

Its on a list which i will post in a certain section 😛
Just Imagine this for the next 6-9 years. What a ride it will be 🙂 (PS, Zero should charge for this)

almost posted something...decided against it. ahhh progress!! :D

jennings will get his contract - he doesn't seem worried so i'm not either.

Jenning's agent is the same guy who held out Cedric Benson as a rookie and then signed essentially the same deal the Bears had offered 2 months previously.

I don't really like Jennings agent but it looks like this is a deal that everyone wants and is in the best interests of all.

Remember Ted Thompson wanted to do this deal last year and Jennings wanted to wait.

One other detail I would like to point out is that 40 speed is not a good indicator of success in the NFL. It is better to look at the 3 cone drill and the shuttle run at the combine.

The ability to change direction quickly determines how well a reciever can get open. Jennings only has Jerry Rice speed at 4.6 in the 40 but he can sure get open deep.

Ah yes, good memory.

What I find hilarious about all of the media/message board coverage of Ted Thompson as GM is the desire to speak in definite generalities about his moves and philosophy, even though he repeatedly acts and speaks in a manner that rejects some kind of dogmatic philosophy about running an NFL organization. "Ted does not spend money on WR's." "Ted does not sign FA's." "Ted does not trade up in the draft." Every situation is different and all the factors are newly weighed each time. That much has become obvious. It's like people want to simplify his approach to managing the Packers down to their layman's understanding of the job. None of us know as much as Ted does about running a football organization. I'm sure his decision processes are more in depth and complex than ours are, let alone the boxes we usually try to fit his philosophy into when we vent about him.

Agreed.

Football quickness is not the same as track speed. With exceptions - Willie Gault would have really been fun to throw to. I think you hit the nail on the head with the changing direction thing. If I'm not mistaken, Jennings gets sent on a lot of posts and that's where football quickness comes in (vs track speed).

Javon was a different story. He was a first round pick that got a lot of his money on a front end loaded deal. He didn't do squat to earn what he made the first two years and then when he had the big third year he started complaining.

I think Ted felt over the three years Javon had been compensated fairly and wanted to see one more good year before redoing his contract.

That's not anything like the Jennings deal. He has outperformed what he has been paid ever since he got here.

I don't know if he's lucky or good but Javon only had one really decent season after that so Thompson's call turned out to be the right one there.

I think this whole deal about Thompson and not wanting to pay WR's stems from Walker and I wouldn't hold my hat on this one case as how he feels about that what so ever.

Thompson knows Jennings is a special player and a huge component to the success of the team and not a player you can just replace. Anybody buying a story that he thinks he can just pop somebody else in there because somebody else said so is being misguided.

Yikes... that seems a little steep to me... but anyway..

Source of Course... via another Packer site...

The Packers are apparently close to announcing that they have signed star wide receiver Greg Jennings to a contract extension. Word out of Green Bay is that the deal could be worth about $8 million a year. Jennings is one of several players that find themselves in a bind with the unresolved collective bargaining agreement. If a new CBA isnt struck before March of 2010, Jennings wouldnt be an unrestricted free agent. If no deal is in place, he would be a restricted free agent for the next two years because of language in that states in the final league year of the current CBA players wouldnt become free agents until six accrued season, as opposed the four seasons it currently takes. In this case, if the money is right, discretion is the better part of valor.

pack93z...thanks for posting that, I was literally about to ask for clarification on the CBA rule that wouldn't allow jennings to leave.

I agree with zero...it seems clear to me that "tight wad ted" gives the impression that he will get things for as cheap as possible. Not always true, I know, but the perception certainly exists, and him not rewarding Jennings...as classy a player that exists in the NFL, and one of the top WRs, then that will ruffle a lot of feathers and set an awful precedent. I'm a Ted Thompson supporter, but if he doesn't pay Greg well, I too will be peaved.
