Wow. With those rankings, it's hard to believe the Packers had a 6-10 season. Just goes to show you the value of little edges.

"Defense wins championships"? According to this power ranking, the Cardinals were ranked 30th in defense (and I know they were dead last in running back production)!

They snuck in to the playoffs and then their defense came alive. They are definitely an anomaly. I could carry this forward into the playoffs but don't want to because that would mean increasing the size of my excel table by 150%, or making it ugly. Either way... don't want to do it.

Some interesting things. Look at Chicago's defense - definitely not the powerhouse it used to be (as we all know). Look at NE's offense - shows how good they are to finish 3rd/4th without Brady.

I'd be curious to see your formula. Or is it proprietary?

Well I'm not gonna send you the table. But I'll explain it as best I can.

I started off with a 32x32 grid where I entered points for games played between the teams in the appropriate cells. Later on I had to add to this to adjust for the two divisional games per season (that was a pain in the ass). I adjust the scores by subtracting 7 points from each team's score if there was a defensive TD scored (I figure that's worth -7 points for the O giving it up, and -7 points allowed for the D scoring it). Same goes for safeties and -2 points.

At the end of each column I have average points for, and at the end of each row I have average points against.

Then I have another smaller table with columns for each week and 32 rows (1 per team) for offense and 32 rows (1 per team) for defense.

For each cell in this second table, I take, for example, the points scored by Green Bay in Week 10, and subtract from those points the average points given up by their opponent. For defense, I take the points Green Bay gave up, and subtract from that the average points scored by their opponent. So every week I fill up a column with the adjusted points scored and points allowed by each team.

I simply take the average of these for their offensive and defensive scores, and combine the two for their overall ranking score.

I think if you could account for individual team strengths the accuracy of the computation would be a little more effective.

Take our friends to the West in purple.. they can neutralize a decent running offense.. but can defend or pass the ball a lick.. straight scoring formula's don't account for when they face a team with a strong running defense and effective passing attack..

So like, a "good" passing and "good" rushing game would trump a less balanced team with a "very good" passing game and "ok" running game? Hmm... sounds interesting. I think you should devise something to measure it!

I just went on the assumption that scoring is the ultimate measurable of a team's strength, or alternatively, their ability to shut down scoring. I figure the details will work themselves out over a 17 week season.

dfosterf (16-Apr) : Trade, cut or keep
dfosterf (16-Apr) : that from Jaire
dfosterf (16-Apr) : My guess is the Packers floated the concept of a reworked contract via his agent and agent got a f'
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Yes, and that is why I think Rob worded it how he did. Rather than say "agent"
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Same laws apply. Agent must present such an offer to Jaire. Cannot accept or reject without presenting it
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : I'm thinking that is why Rob worded it how he did.
dfosterf (16-Apr) : The Packers can certainly still make the offer to the agent
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Laws of agency and definition of fiduciary responsibility
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Jaire is open to a reduced contract without Jaire's permission
dfosterf (16-Apr) : The agent would arguably violate the law if he were to tell the Packers
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : That someone ... likely the agent.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : So, Jaire has not been offered nor rejected a pay reduction, but someone says he'd decline.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Demovksy says t was direct communication with someone familiar with Jaire’s line of thinking at that moment.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Demovsky just replied to me a bit ago. Jaire hasn't said it.
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Of course, that depends on the definition of "we"
dfosterf (16-Apr) : We have been told that they haven't because he wouldn't accept it. I submit we don't know that
dfosterf (16-Apr) : What is the downside in making a calculated reduced offer to Jaire?
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Packers are receiving interest in Jaire Alexander but a trade is not imminent
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Jalen Ramsey wants to be traded. He's never happy is he?
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : two 1sts in 2022 and two 2nd's in 2023 and 2024
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Packers had fortunate last three drafts.
