How many theyll keep: Probably 5.

Best guess (*=starter): Grant*, Jackson, Wynn, Johnson*, Kuhn.

Breakdown: Halfbacks The drop-off in Grants production last season is well-documented. After missing all offseason practices and the first week of training camp while awaiting a multiyear contract the Packers eventually gave him a four-year deal with a maximum value of $30 million; he already has missed escalators Grant injured a hamstring and wasnt at full speed for months. Though he ended up rushing for 1,203 yards, his yards per carry plummeted from 5.1 in 2007 to 3.9 a byproduct of breaking only two runs all season for longer than 22 yards, as he struggled to break arm tackles and get past second-level defenders. At 6-foot-1, Grant is a long bruiser who never will beat defenders with straight speed or quickness, but he's shown his downhill running style can be effective. His first full offseason of work in the Packers program should help him; a healthy and settled offensive line wouldn't hurt either. But whether Grant returns to the form that made him such a threat in his first season here remains to be seen. Coach Mike McCarthy has been reluctant to employ a two-back system, and Grant certainly is being paid like a No. 1 guy. He was due to receive a $2.75 million roster bonus in March, on top of his $1.25 million base salary and a workout bonus of $250,000 for total compensation of $4.25 million this year. Jackson is a former second-round pick entering his third season, a key benchmark. He became a reliable third-down back last season, but his numbers (45 carries for 248 yards with a long of 32, 30 receptions for 185 yards with a long of 18) reflect the fact that he simply hasnt shown game-breaking ability. Wynn responded well after getting cut in August but didnt get many chances (eight carries for 110 yards, all in the last two games). He probably has an edge over Lumpkin, who beat out Wynn in training camp last year but is coming off a significant hamstring injury that ended his rookie season. Sutton, the undrafted rookie from Northwestern, is undersized (5-foot-8, 211 pounds), hasnt been durable, doesnt have great speed and needs to have a fantastic preseason to make the team. Fullbacks Johnson (6-1, 250) seems to be the sort of sledgehammer the Packers lacked during their slide last season, when short-yardage and goal-line situations repeatedly caused problems. That the Packers were willing to draft a fullback in the fifth round and had graded him higher than that shows how much they like Johnson, who is a good bet to make the team. The Packers wont carry three fullbacks, so barring an injury, either Hall or Kuhn probably is out. Theyve been used relatively interchangeably, though Kuhn is better inside, Hall perhaps better in space. Both have been core special-teams players. Hall is more athletic and carries the lower price tag ($460,000 vs. Kuhn's $1.01 million). But Kuhn has been more durable, and that gives him the edge here.

Quinn Johnson will start? I think Ryan Grant would like that a lot. I know I'd like to see him blow some people up. lol

The running backs need holes to produce. Adrian Peterson is a beast, but the Vikes run game is and was always about their o-line.

The o-line has to produce. Four seasons of mediocrity in the trenches has made me sick. Let's get our nastiest big men out there and let them gel from the get go.

I think they need to mix it up more. It was far to predictable. Grant on the field, the defense could almost give up the flats, because they were never going to throw it to him. He gets a few dump offs, but never is a threat to the defense receiving wise. I think Jackson given the oppoutunities, can produce close to Grant running, and better receiving, which is why I would prefer more time for Jackson. Wynn showed some nice power running late in the season, and looked like a real possibility as a short yardage back. Lumpkin, well, I just love the name.

What I really hope is they really switch away from this outside ZBS and get back to some smashmouth running.

I'd actually prefer Hall over Kuhn. I mean, both are equally skilled at what they do in my eyes. In Quinn we will have a great inside guy for running plays. Don't know if he can pass-block that well, but I can imagine that he'd be in the game for that aswell.

In Hall we'll have a receiving thread who's pretty athletic and has pretty good hands for a fullback.

In Kuhn, we'll have Johnson with worse hands and, as his only real upside to me, he's a good short-yardage runner with the ball in his hand. (Imagine that, Kuhn following Johnson's block)

As for the HBs. I'd prefer more of a two back backfield aswell. I think that McCarthy should give Jackson some more carries. Like said, he's a better receiver and was running the ball just as good, if not better, than Grant last year, in his limited amount of rushes.

Maybe we could bring in a speedster next year to go with Grant's running. But that's all for the future.

Note how Pelissero avoided mentioning Brandon Jackson's yards per carry (5.5) because he wanted to make him look bad. This is what drives me nuts about these writers sometimes. I agree with PackFanWithTwins that Jackson should be used way more than he was last season. I also agree that less ZBS would be a good thing.

I agree with PackFanWithTwins that Jackson should be used way more than he was last season. I also agree that less ZBS would be a good thing.

I agree - the author was intentionally trying to make jackson look bad; and his ypc is much higher and if I'm not mistaken he has had a fair amount of decent run plays (cant find site with stats).

I like jacksons running better then grants. Grant seemed to get tied up and had trouble evading a blocker while jackson could often plow through someone.

I think they should give grant the ball less next season and jackson more and wynn a bit also (he did really well in 07).

As far as full backs ... I dont know whom I like better; I like both hall and kuhn and really have no complaints about either (this is one position where I have no complaints). We definately should get quinn some playing time to see how well he does with some lead blocking and pass protection. Maybe even some short-yardage plays.

I sure did note that. McCarthy would be well-served to consider opening up the position to more competition this off-season. Grant looked great in '07, but last year he went down WAY too easy. Jackson might not have his size, but he fought a lot harder for his yards and is more versatile. And Lumpkin needs to get a fair shake - he looked a fair bit better than Wynn before his hammy injury.
