This is something that cannot be given to the player by the club. It's in the CBA as part of the rookie contract. If it's the players 2nd contract, then teams have done things to remedy the unfortunate statistical miss.

If the team wants to pay the player more, the CBA has easy loopholes for that. The CBA only stops teams when the team doesn't want to do it, as it's just a written excuse, with ease loopholes.
Packers gave rookie contract Jordan Love an extension going into his 4th year instead of a 5th year option contract... just do the exact same thing, but void the 5th year...
