Savion Williams | Wide Receiver | TCU | 6'4" - 222 lbs.

Overview
Developmental wideout who offers an alluring blend of physical gifts and untapped potential. Williams is big, strong and fast but very raw as a route-runner and is unreliable with his hands. His production is uneven as a traditional wideout, but he adds a dynamic kick to the offense as a gadget runner and as a catch-and-run option underneath. He excels on power sweeps and is willful enough for consideration on short-yardage and goal-line carries on direct snaps. The ball skills can be hit-or-miss. but there are flashes to work with on tape. The difference between “siren song” or “pot of gold” could rest in Williams’ technical development and the creativity of his play-caller.

Strengths
  • Elite blend of size, speed and explosiveness.
  • Gadget option who piled up production on direct snaps.
  • Possesses size and strength to beat press and become a bully on slants/hitches.
  • Can floor accelerator and race to top speed, creating vertical separation.
  • Put highlight-reel touchdown catches on tape against UCF.
  • Aggressive working back to the throw when needed.
  • Creates chunk plays out of short tosses, using wiggle and strength.
  • Size/strength mismatch for cornerbacks trying to tackle him.

Weaknesses
  • Upright at break points with messy, inefficient footwork.
  • Step-counting dulls play speed and field awareness on intermediate routes.
  • Below-average ball-tracking talent to run under deep throws.
  • Lack of focus and catch technique leads to drops.
  • Sublime athlete but he’s more utility player than wideout.

“It’s so hard to not fall in love with all of his traits. Worst-case scenario you let him return kicks and find a way to get the ball in his hands five or six times per game on offense.” – NFC area scout

From Bob McGill who had his as the number 8 receiver.

Spent five years at TCU but didn’t become a starter until 2022. “That’s the wild card for me,” said one scout. “With this guy, you see him in the slot, you see him in the backfield, in motion. He is a height-weight-speed guy. I wouldn’t be shocked to see him slip into the first round. Would it be a little crazy? Probably, because he doesn’t have the resume, but he’s got a big upside.

He’s Cordarrelle Patterson. He’s got no polish but you see him elevate for a ball and you see him catch a bubble and take it to the house. You see him run an angle (route) out of the backfield and catch it and run to the house. If I didn’t have a quarterback and was trying to figure out a way to manufacture some offense, I’m all over this guy. He could go 25 to 45.” Four-star recruit played quarterback as a senior in Marshall, Texas. Also lettered in basketball and track. Returned kickoffs as a freshman only (22.3, 14 returns).

“He’s big, he’s fast, he’s tough,” another scout said. “But he does not know how to play football. He can’t run routes, No. 1. He just falls all the time. He doesn’t have a good feel for it. Doesn’t have good body control. He always falls, and he can’t catch. I’ve never seen a guy drop more. Then they put him out at running back and he just doesn’t have the vision. I’ve never seen someone run into tackles more than he does or run out of bounds. He goes to the place you’re not supposed to go.” Caught 137 passes for 1,655 (12.1) and 14 TDs to go with 62 rushes for 384 (6.2) and six TDs. Played 52 games.

They are restocking the WR room. Golden, Reed, Doubs and Williams will lead the way. Wicks and Heath will fit for scraps. Watson will work like a mad man to get back on the field. If his daddy didn't like Golden he will hate Williams even more. It's conceivable the Packers are ready to move on from both Doubs and Watson at the end of the season.

IIRC, MLF was underwhelmed with the WR effort vs. Philly in the playoffs. they did not stack well, i.e. maintain advantageous positioning, ran the wrong routes, and basically get pushed around. Ergo, the selections

My concern with elite physical talents that have not developed at all... do they really care about the sport? If yes, then why in the hell aren't they more developed?

Sometimes there is a good answer, like they struggle in school, and SERIOUSLY had to fight hard to keep their grades up so they could keep playing, and they just couldn't do both (which isn't great)... but it's a heck of a lot better than a number of players like this, that they were too busy working on their rap careers instead of focusing on and developing in football.

Or you know, the Sam Shields answer, their coaches SUPPOSEDLY NEVER showed them film, or pointed out how he could improve... Note: I believe that was Shields talking about his college DB coach, which he was on the offensive side until maybe his last year?

But I want to know why, he hasn't been able to develop more as a WR with all his freak amazing talents.

But IF the Packers can develop him, he could potentially be the steal of the draft.... but that IF is a huge one.

He seems more like a gadget/manufactured touches guy for the moment.

Shields he was a WR until his last year and then switched to CB. Never heard about his coaches not helping him with film/giving pointers which seems counter productive.

Regarding Williams, again I'm not surprised they picked a WR but figured they'd get one in the 4th. Only surprise is how raw Williams is, figured they'd go with someone a little more polished.
Under Construction!

more excited about this pick than Golden. This guys is like Patterson and Samuel rolled into one. Use him correctly and its a big problem for defenses

I realize a lot of fans like to see the Swiss Army knife players get out there and befuddle the defense. Personally I don't like to see the ball taken out of Love's hands. (Favre and Rodgers before him.) Williams can help the team plenty and not line up as the Wildcat.
