3 Packers who deserve blame for brutal loss to Lions in Week 14
The Packers cost themselves throughout the game.
By Ryan Heckman | Dec 6, 2024

Week 14 was as pivotal a game as there has been, this season, for the Green Bay Packers. Coming into Thursday Night Football, the Packers were 9-3 going up against the first-place Detroit Lions, who sat with a record of 11-1.

The first half saw the Packers make some costly mistakes and never quite get going offensively, en route to a Lions 17-7 lead going into the break. But, the second half took a turn in the blink of an eye. In a matter of just a couple of minutes, the Packers had gone up 21-17 and suddenly, we had a tight game.

The second half remained tight all the way down to the wire, with the Lions ultimately finding themselves with the ball on the game's final play.

After a gutsy fourth-down conversion, Detroit set themselves up for the game-winning field goal as time expired, beating the Packers 34-31. As is often customary for fans to do, it's time to ask the question: who is to blame?

Which Packers let the team down the most in their Week 14 loss to Detroit?

Quay Walker, LB
The final score resulted in just a three-point game, and Quay Walker's 15-yard penalty in the first half looks like it might have been the difference. In the end, Walker's unnecessary roughness penalty ended with the Lions getting three points.

After the Lions accepted the penalty and proceeded to gain zero yards on the first, second, and third down thereafter, they were at least on the board with a field goal, taking a 10-7 lead. That field goal did, indeed, end up being the difference in this game.

Isaiah McDuffie, LB
The Packers' linebackers were attacked over and over again in this one, and Isaiah McDuffie might have been the most ineffective player on that side of the ball. He was atrocious in coverage.

McDuffie gave up nine receptions on nine targets for 68 yards and a touchdown to running back Jahmyr Gibbs. McDuffie allowed a team-worst opposing passer rating of 135.2 to Jared Goff when targeted, per Pro Football Focus.

Entire Packers offensive line
One of the biggest storylines going into this game was how beat-up the Lions were on defense. Specifically, their defensive line and pass rush were hurting big time. Yet, the Packers continually gave up pressures all night to this Lions front — 16 to be exact, including five hits on Jordan Love.

Not were they poor in pass protection, but Green Bay barely averaged over four yards per carry on the ground thanks to the Lions coming up with run stops.

I think McDuffie was/is being misused. He can't is physically powerful, but not fast, and with limited quickness, i.e. not a cover guy, so for Hafley to put him in man situations, as previously posted, was a mistake.

Also, John Meerdink wrote:

.... But against the Lions, the results from the non-Walker linebackers weren’t nearly enough. McDuffie led the team with 15 tackles, but both he and Wilson were repeatedly victimized in the passing game. According to Pro Football Focus charting, the Lions were a combined 13 of 13 passing for 95 yards and two touchdowns when targeting McDuffie and Wilson. (Walker wasn’t much better for his part, surrendering three completions for 32 yards on three targets.)

In short, the Packers linebackers didn’t get the job done. Well, three of them didn’t. There’s a fourth we know practically nothing about, aside from two key facts. First, the Packers love Ty’Ron Hopper. And second, they refuse to play him.

I think Hafley is doing a very good job. He is delivering very good meals with average to below average ingredients.

The HB Angle play was not the LB fault. The RB ran a great route. It was an excellent play call and super hard to defend. That one I won't put on the LB.

1-3 in the division says it all. This team may make the playoffs but are far from contending. This offense, specifically the passing game, has been a huge let down. Signing Jacobs literally saved this offense from being mediocre at best.

I don't know who wrote this article, but it is a bunch of crap.
I know everybody is a f-ck-ng expert on football these days, at least they think they are.
I love how it's stated that the Lions were beat up and The Packers should have taken advantage.
The Packers put up 31 points, including 3 rushing td's, yet some are dissapointed. Boo f-ck-ng who.
Get over it.
I also love how it is not mentioned that The Packers defense basically played without 4 of their 5 starting db's most of the game. No excuse, next man up, when Zane Anderson has to play defense, there's a problem. He actually showed pretty good, but the physicality that had been showing up was gone.
Screw the blame game, if you can't except a loss , I feel bad for you.

Second, which components of the two articles did you disagree with? I am not trying to be pejorative, but I thought they were pretty accurate. You have to admit " the Lions were a combined 13 of 13 passing for 95 yards and two touchdowns when targeting McDuffie and Wilson. (Walker wasn’t much better for his part, surrendering three completions for 32 yards on three targets.)" does not show the LB's performance to be strong. And I will grant you, PFF grades are not perfect. But to the naked eye, our hook/underneath areas were easy pickings, for Goff.

Finally, to point about the banged up secondary, it is a very good one, and the two major issues - poor linebacker coverage and banged up secondary - actually go hand in hand. Because we are banged up, going dime is really not an option, meaning we are going to have mismatches.

This limitation is also accentuated by the lack of physicality a dime package brings, especially against a team like Detroit.

I just hope our guys get heathy in time for a long playoff run.

Go Packers!!!!

Clickbait articles are the worst !

These clowns only want views, and reactions from fans who can't accept the fact that their team doesn't always play perfect.

beast (6h) : What is he supposed to say? He doesn't want players currently on the team?
Martha Careful (10h) : meh
Zero2Cool (14h) : Sounds like Walker and Wyatt will be with Packers for beyond 2026

Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : sounds like Packers don't get good compensation, Jaire staying
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Nobody coming up with a keep, but at x amount
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Trade, cut or keep
dfosterf (16-Apr) : that from Jaire
dfosterf (16-Apr) : My guess is the Packers floated the concept of a reworked contract via his agent and agent got a f'
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Yes, and that is why I think Rob worded it how he did. Rather than say "agent"
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Same laws apply. Agent must present such an offer to Jaire. Cannot accept or reject without presenting it
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : I'm thinking that is why Rob worded it how he did.
dfosterf (16-Apr) : The Packers can certainly still make the offer to the agent
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Laws of agency and definition of fiduciary responsibility
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Jaire is open to a reduced contract without Jaire's permission
dfosterf (16-Apr) : The agent would arguably violate the law if he were to tell the Packers
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : That someone ... likely the agent.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : So, Jaire has not been offered nor rejected a pay reduction, but someone says he'd decline.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Demovksy says t was direct communication with someone familiar with Jaire’s line of thinking at that moment.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Demovsky just replied to me a bit ago. Jaire hasn't said it.
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Of course, that depends on the definition of "we"
dfosterf (16-Apr) : We have been told that they haven't because he wouldn't accept it. I submit we don't know that
dfosterf (16-Apr) : What is the downside in making a calculated reduced offer to Jaire?
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Packers are receiving interest in Jaire Alexander but a trade is not imminent
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Jalen Ramsey wants to be traded. He's never happy is he?
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : two 1sts in 2022 and two 2nd's in 2023 and 2024
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Packers had fortunate last three drafts.
dfosterf (15-Apr) : I may have to move
dfosterf (15-Apr) : My wife just told the ancient Japanese sushi dude not enough rice under his fish
Zero2Cool (14-Apr) : I think a dozen is what I need
dfosterf (14-Apr) : Go fund me for this purpose just might work. A dozen nurses show up at 1265 to provide mental health assistance.
dfosterf (14-Apr) : Maybe send a crew of Angels to the Packers draft room on draft day.
Zero2Cool (14-Apr) : I am the Angel that gets visited.
dfosterf (14-Apr) : Visiting Angels has a pretty good reputation
Zero2Cool (14-Apr) : what
Martha Careful (14-Apr) : WINNING IT, not someone else losing it. The best victory though was re-uniting with his wife
Martha Careful (14-Apr) : The manner in which he won it was just amazing and wonderful. First blowing the lead then getting back, then blowing it. But ultimately
Zero2Cool (12-Apr) : I'm guessing since the thumb was broken, he wasn't feeling it.
dfosterf (10-Apr) : Looking for guidance. Not feeling the thumb.
Mucky Tundra (10-Apr) : If they knew about it or not
Mucky Tundra (10-Apr) : I don't recall that he did which is why I asked.
