Jamin Davis was added to Green Bay’s practice squad on Tuesday

The Green Bay Packers  announced on Tuesday that they let go of practice squad linebacker Chris Russell, who originally signed with the Packers as an undrafted free agent in mid-August, in order to clear a roster spot for the addition of former first-round linebacker Jamin Davis . Davis, the 19th overall pick in the 2021 draft, turned a breakout redshirt junior season at Kentucky — his first season as a starter — into a soaring draft stock with the help of his 4.47-second 40-yard dash time and a 42” vertical jump.

In four seasons with the Washington Commanders , Davis played in 50 games, made 36 starts and recorded a total of 2,244 defensive snaps. Technically, Davis played the defensive end position for the Commanders under new head coach Dan Quinn, as the team attempted to utilize his raw athleticism there in 2024. With that being said, he did play an off-ball linebacker role for the majority of his career in Washington. Considering the Packers’ lack of depth at the linebacker position, it’s safe to assume that he’s going to be working as an off-ball linebacker in Green Bay.

Jamin Davis was drafted with pick 19 of round 1 in the 2021 draft class. He scored a 9.94 RAS out of a possible 10.00. This ranked 15 out of 2155 LB from 1987 to 2021. https://t.co/wJV3SZTNIK  #RAS  pic.twitter.com/t3cI0yOz8o

At the moment, the Packers only have four healthy off-ball linebackers on their 53-man roster: Eric Wilson, Isaiah McDuffie, rookie Edgerrin Cooper and rookie Ty’Ron Hopper. Hopper hasn’t played a single defensive snap for Green Bay yet in a regular season game. Quay Walker will be added back to the linebacker rotation whenever he passes through concussion protocol, as he went down two weeks ago with the head injury and also was inactive last game versus the Jacksonville Jaguars .

On top of the thin linebacker room on the 53-man roster, Russell was the team’s only practice squad linebacker. If the plan isn’t to make Davis an off-ball linebacker, linebacker will be the only offensive or defensive position that isn’t represented on the Packers’ 17-man practice squad. That’s why it’s highly likely that Green Bay will consider Davis a linebacker, beyond just their announcement of him as such in their press release on Tuesday.

Davis was released from Washington’s 53-man roster just a week ago, so he hasn’t been on the market long. Prior to going on the injured reserve in 2023, he had started 28 games for the Commanders over the 2022 and 2023 seasons. The injury that ended Davis’ 2023 campaign was a shoulder injury. Davis has run into some off-field trouble in his young career, as the avid NASCAR fan has been charged and found guilty twice of reckless driving.

But both sucked in coverage, which probably is what made Davis fall out of favor with the new defensive scheme. Davis is a small extremely fast LB, that sucks in coverage, but he graded out well in run defense, pass rushing and tackling in 2023, when he was used as an ILB.

In 2024, with a new coaches and scheme, they moved him to edge rusher, which simply put, he's 235 lbs, he's not an edge rusher in the NFL. But he also wasn't a LB in that coverage heavy scheme. An attacking style will suit him a lot better.

Not saying he'll develop, but he fits this Packers defensive scheme a lot better than the new Commanders scheme.

I guess this means that not all draft picks, even first round picks will be a success in the NFL. To hear many Packer fans, if Gute drafts them, they should end up in The Hall no matter what round they are taken in.

Packers LB coach Anthony Campanile says new P-squad signing Jamin Davis is playing inside linebacker here. Campanile talked with Davis before the 2021 draft, in which Davis went in the first round. Campanile said you can tell why Davis went first round after today’s practice.

I wonder if they keep him at LB or give him reps at DE with Preston gone.

If they're at full time Edge Rushers that means they have failed to develop their coverage skills, which with their athletic potential should be their strength.

Mucky Tundra (13h) : Houston getting dog walked by Baltimore
packerfanoutwest (19h) : Feliz Navidad!
Zero2Cool (23h) : Merry Christmas!
beast (25-Dec) : Merry Christmas 🎄🎁
beast (24-Dec) : Sounds like no serious injuries from the Saints game and Jacobs and Watson should play in the Vikings game
packerfanoutwest (24-Dec) : both games Watson missed, Packers won
Martha Careful (24-Dec) : I hope all of you have a Merry Christmas!
Mucky Tundra (24-Dec) : Oh I know about Jacobs, I just couldn't pass up an opportunity to mimic Zero lol
buckeyepackfan (24-Dec) : Jacobs was just sat down, Watson re-injured that knee that kept him out 1 game earlier
buckeyepackfan (24-Dec) : I needed .14 that's. .14 points for the whole 4th quarter to win and go to the SB. Lol
Mucky Tundra (24-Dec) : Jacobs gonna be OK???
Zero2Cool (24-Dec) : Watson gonna be OK???
packerfanoutwest (24-Dec) : Inactives tonight for the Pack: Alexander- knee Bullard - ankle Williams - quad Walker -ankle Monk Heath
packerfanoutwest (24-Dec) : No Jaire, but hopefully the front 7 destroys the line of scrimmage & forces Rattler into a few passes to McKinney.
packerfanoutwest (24-Dec) : minny could be #1 seed and the Lions #5 seed
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : We'd have same Division and Conference records. Strength of schedule we edge them
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I just checked. What tie breaker?
bboystyle (23-Dec) : yes its possible but unlikely. If we do get the 5th, we face the NFCS winner
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : Ahh, ok.
bboystyle (23-Dec) : yes due to tie breaker
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I mean, unlikely, yes, but mathematically, 5th is possible by what I'm reading.
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : If Vikings lose out, Packers win out, Packers get 5th, right?
bboystyle (23-Dec) : Minny isnt going to lose out so 5th seed is out of the equation. We are playing for the 6th or 7th seed which makes no difference
Mucky Tundra (23-Dec) : beast, the ad revenue goes to the broadcast company but they gotta pay to air the game on their channel/network
beast (23-Dec) : If we win tonight the game is still relative in terms of 5th, 6th or 7th seed... win and it's 5th or 6th, lose and it's 6th or 7th
beast (23-Dec) : Mucky, I thought the ad revenue went to the broadcasting companies or the NFL, at least not directly
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I think the revenue share is moot, isn't it? That's the CBA an Salary Cap handling that.
bboystyle (23-Dec) : i mean game becomes irrelevant if we win tonight. Just a game where we are trying to play spoilers to Vikings chance at the #1 seed
Mucky Tundra (23-Dec) : beast, I would guess ad revenue from more eyes watching tv
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I would think it would hurt the home team because people would have to cancel last minute maybe? i dunno
beast (23-Dec) : I agree that it's BS for fans planning on going to the game. But how does it bring in more money? I'm guessing indirectly?
packerfanoutwest (23-Dec) : bs on flexing the game....they do it for the $$league$$, not the hometown fans
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I see what you did there Mucky
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : dammit. 3:25pm
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : Packers Vikings flexed to 3:35pm
Mucky Tundra (23-Dec) : Upon receiving the news about Luke Musgrave, I immediately fell to the ground
Mucky Tundra (23-Dec) : Yeah baby!
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : LUKE MUSGRAVE PLAYING TONIGHT~!~~~~WOWHOAAOHAOAA yah
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I wanna kill new QB's ... blitz the crap out of them.
beast (23-Dec) : Barry seemed to get too conservative against new QBs, Hafley doesn't have that issue
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : However, we seem to struggle vs new QB's
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : Should be moot point, cuz Packers should win tonight.
packerfanoutwest (23-Dec) : ok I stand corrected
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : Ok, yes, you are right. I see that now how they get 7th
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : 5th - Packers win out, Vikings lose out. Maybe?
beast (23-Dec) : Saying no to the 6th lock.
beast (23-Dec) : No, with the Commanders beating the Eagles, Packers could have a good chance of 6th or 7th unless the win out
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I think if Packers win, they are locked 6th with chance for 5th.
beast (23-Dec) : But it doesn't matter, as the Packers win surely win one of their remaining games
beast (23-Dec) : This is not complex, just someone doesn't want to believe reality
