I'm going to go to college in august, graduating soon. I wanted to know how you all adjusted to a completely different life? I'm just a little nervous whenever I think about it. Whats it really like compared to High school?

What course/major are you doing?

dfosterf is absolutely right. Accountability is an important skill one must learn.

One of the biggest pitfalls that I find with many people is an inability to complete work on time. Do not be the type of person to be staying up all night before an assignment is due trying to form some semblance of an answer. Do it and do it early.

Finally, one oft-neglected skill that is essential for university and life in general is critical thinking/analysis. You must always critically analyse what you've been learning. This is not to say you must criticise what you're learning; rather you should be asking yourself 'why am I learning this?', 'if a is true, then what of b', and try to understand the fundamental message (or first principles) of any issue at hand.

In High School, you are told that gravity = 9.81 m/s (or whatever archaic US Imperial unit you happen to be taught :P). These are (for the most part) indisputable data or empirical basics and you take them as given as fact. In university you are told that electrons orbit following s-, p-, d- and f- shell orbitals, for example. But this begs the question, why? Why do we use such a model? We find that it is the result of Heisenberg's uncertainty principle, Bohr's atom model and probability distributions. But it is still a function that we conceive to explain electron locations, and is not a panacea with 100% confidence. Although this example is rather rudimentary, by thinking through problems it allows you to gain true insight into whatever degree you are learning. I never really noticed critical thinking until I was introduced to standard engineering codes and theory - I began to ask myself why such formulas existed and what purpose they served, how they related between empirical data and theoretical modelling. I think of how our understanding of engineering design has changed over the past 100 years and how it will change in the next 100 years - and how I can apply my knowledge to capitalise on concepts that are still in the deep recesses of our dreams.

As for general university life, it'll be fun and frustrating. There'll be times when you're having the best time of your life and others when you're stuck in a rut. But you'll learn from it.

In a sense it's easier in Australia because most people tend to stay in their home State for the most part, so living on campus is not something I can provide any assistance with.

Honestly though, I found the transition exceedingly easy and I love the additional freedoms of college/university. And as great as the experience is, being in my 5th year, some of that fun is lost on me.

Sorry, that's probably a bit more longwinded than you'd want.

The biggest difference is personal accountability. It is the biggest danger for most also.

These two. I'm a junior at Madison right now and from my experience nothing is more important than making sure you know what you need to do and when you need to do it by, regardless of whether it's school or bills or whatever (especially bills like rent or tuition because I doubt most high schoolers have had that responsibility). The other thing as Engineer said is that you have to think critically. I was fortunate that my high school demanded that we think and argue critically from freshman year on. Professors in college wet their pants when you can think and argue critically.

Finally, don't worry about it. Relax and have fun. I remember pretty clearly when my parents dropped me off at the dorm and saying good bye to them, the first thing that went through my head was, "what the fuck do I do now." Walk down your hall and meet people. That's the best thing you can do early on is just meet everyone you can because they'll all be making the same adjustment you are.

In college, do your homework FIRST. Make SURE all your work is done FIRST.

Then, with your spare time, have fun!

Just Remember....

YOUR College Education has a life expectancy of 18 months on the job.

After that..... Unless you have done something with it you are toast.

I went back to college after being out of school for 20 years, it took some getting used to, but just make sure you hit the books and mix in some fun. I will be graduating here in a few weeks with an associates in computer support and also one in Business Administration. Enjoy your time in college and my biggest advice to you is DON'T FORGET TO CHECK OUT THE LADIES 🙂
Just Imagine this for the next 6-9 years. What a ride it will be 🙂 (PS, Zero should charge for this)

I can identify with that! I was out of school for 14 years when i went back. And it was REALLY alot of fun being around all those "kids".
My wife had a hard time with it.........me being around all the young "college babes".
TRUE STORY:
I kept telling my wife "Honey, you have NOTHING to worry about! What would any of those young girls want with an old guy like me?"
My wife decides to show up at the college one day to "surprise" me.......I'm out in the hallway with this cute young 18 year old girl.........the girl is down on her knees, BEGGING me to help her with an assignment.......around the corner my wife comes, and all she sees is this cute young thing on her knees in front of me.........LOLOLOL!!!
Now....she KNEW nothing was going on, but do you think she would EVER let me forget it? LOLOLOL!!! It STILL makes me laugh!
I did have the attention of alot of young women at college. Of course i was "Cheesey" even back then, and did all kinds of crazy stuff to make them laugh!
